IMPACTFUL! The much-anticipated sequel to the cult favourite Awarapan has the heart-wrenching emotional tone of the original but is much larger and more commercial in scale. Directed by Nitin Kakkar, the film acknowledges the fondness of the franchise but does not play on that nostalgia to create a new conflict around Shivam Pandit.
The sequel gets off to a strong start with a car chase setting the film’s action-oriented tone. Awarapan 2’s attempts to balance emotional drama, personal conflict, and commercial action remain so dark.
The film’s biggest strength is the screenplay, which weaves in multiple subplots and never loses sight of the central story. The story takes a lot of roads slow in a lot of regards, but it does not lose sight of Shivam’s personal story at the heart of the film and so it does feel engaging in the end because it’s still moving.
The child-centric emotional thread adds significant heart to the film. It gives the protagonist’s journey much more of an emotional dimension and the sequel is not just a sequence of action sequences. The emotional stakes contrast with the much more commercial product of the film.
Emraan Hashmi once again proves why he is the very backbone of the franchise. Shivam is an emotional and raw character. He has lived in the character so that the audience is drawn into the emotional turmoil of the action.
Hashmi’s performance is especially effective in the quieter parts of the film. He does not rely on dialogue or dramatic moments but on facial expressions and body language to communicate Shivam’s inner conflict. His commanding screen presence is very much what the film is about emotionally.
Disha Patani is doing very well and is fitting nicely into the film’s commercial framework. Shabana Azmi is limited in her screen time, but she has a huge impact and carries weight for her performance.
Puran Gabbi is the villain with menace and intensity in the role. He brings the needed threat and helps to push the conflict along. Aniruddh Rawal, Surendar Vicky, and Vijayant Kohli are all very capable and contribute to the film’s ensemble.
But director Nitin Kakkar seems to realize the importance of the Awarapan brand while also trying to give the sequel its own identity. Nostalgia is only used selectively rather than being the only selling point.
The larger canvas allows Awarapan 2 to deliver a few whistle-worthy moments designed for theatrical audiences. The action quotient ensures that the film maintains a commercial appeal even when the narrative gets very emotional.
At the end of the day, though, it doesn’t lose the emotional DNA that made the original so remarkable. So it doesn’t lose that emotional foundation, but it’s broader and has bigger action.
The film’s biggest advantage is the balance between emotion and mass entertainment. The action gives us the theatrical highs while the personal journey of Shivam gives the narrative its emotional core.
In the end, Awarapan 2 is a mass-driven, emotionally charged sequel that benefits greatly from Emraan Hashmi’s commanding performance. The big opening story is very relatable, the central conflict is very strong, child-centric, and the action scenes really make it an entertaining theatrical experience.
The sequel just does not make the same mistake in repeating the original’s formula but it attempts to tap into the franchise’s emotional identity and broaden it. Emraan Hashmi and the fans of Awarapan would find enough nostalgia, emotion, and action in this film to make a return worthwhile.
The verdict: Awarapan 2 is a great commercial sequel, with Emraan Hashmi’s heartbreaking performance, strong emotional scenes, and some whistle-worthy action sequences.
