It has been 25 years since Dil Chahta Hai changed the way Bollywood portrayed friendship, youth and contemporary relationships. Farhan Akhtar’s first and only film as director with Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Akshaye Khanna, released on August 10, 2001, was more than just a success. It turned into a cultural marker and the very definition of friendship for an entire generation.

At the core of the movie were three very different friends, Akash, Sameer and Sid— the three distinct friends of varying profiles were the movie's core. They were like different people, all with different ambitions and different ways of doing things and their friendship was so good. Akash was too carefree and sarcastic, Sameer was romantic and conflicted and Sid a mature, thoughtful and emotionally grounded man. So the three personalities of the three were very similar to each other and as an impactful way to make the film connect with the audience from different generations.
One of the most memorable elements of Dil Chahta Hai is that of Goa and friendship. The iconic Goa trip became almost as well-known as the characters themselves. For many of the viewers there were so many plans to go to Goa with friends to watch the movie as they did in the movie today, and like in the joke around the movie today they were just plans.
Now, 25 years later, a new image celebrating the milestone has brought Akash, Sameer and Sid back together at a Goa fort. The visual has instantly triggered nostalgia among fans who grew up watching the film. The three characters reunited after two and a half decades makes the film feel like a very special one for the audience.
The film’s influence went beyond the story. Dil Chahta Hai brought new visual language, modern style, contemporary dress and modern urban conversation and a different way of friendship in Hindi cinema to Hindi cinema. It reflected the experiences of young people going through careers, relationships, family expectations, family pressures, and personal decisions without looking like conventional Bollywood characters.
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music was also an important part of the film's legacy. Songs like Koi Kahe Kehta Rahe, Jaane Kyon and Tanhayee are all very much associated with the feelings and memories of the characters.
Dil Chahta Hai is still popular after 25 years. Youthful audiences come back to it and older fans come back to it for nostalgia. That central message of friendship, growing up and finding one’s own path is strong.
The latest Goa image perfectly captures that sentiment: Akash, Sameer and Sid may have grown older, but the friendship that made Dil Chahta Hai special still feels exactly the same.
