Imran Khan is again taking action to aid students who are protesting against corruption and irregularities in competitive exams. The actor commented on the current protests in Jharkhand and claimed the global community is not paying attention to them. Imran posted a black screen on his official Twitter account which read: “Students protesting in Jharkhand. Let’s all ignore them, what could possibly go wrong?” This bitter comment speaks to his disappointment that young aspirants are not being heard about.
Imran was also active in the student movements in Mumbai in earlier years; he had taken part in demonstrations in Mumbai to support students’ demands for fair and transparent examination systems. These protests were a regional extension of the major demonstrations at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi where students and activists rallied strongly against NEET irregularities and demanded administrative accountability.
The current unrest in Jharkhand is centered on thousands of aspirants holding a sit-in campaign in Ranchi. The demonstrators are pressing for a full investigation by the CBI into alleged paper leaks, systemic corruption and huge discrepancies on the 14th Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and JSSC-CGL recruitment exams. Protesters have accused the government of failing to maintain examination integrity and want structural changes to their academic and professional future to be made.
Imran Khan is not the only film personality to comment on the situation. Also, actress Sonakshi Sinha was extremely distressed. She posted an explanatory video on her Instagram account that details the causes of Ranchi protests and accompanied this video with an emotional plea, “It’s so disheartening to see students of our country go through this… when will it stop??” As other people go out of touch with the regional protests, public pressure is being put on the government to fix the longstanding deficiencies of India’s competitive examination system.
