Nearly two decades after Awarapan, producer Vishesh Bhatt has opened up about the long wait behind the sequel and why the emotional significance of bringing back Shivam, the character portrayed by Emraan Hashmi, has become very real.
Bhatt called Awarapan not just a movie but a deeply personal journey based on Shivam. The original movie needed time to be understood, accepted and loved before the filmmakers could start to consider telling the character's story to its end, he said.
“Awarapan is not just a movie; it’s a journey… a journey of Shivam,” Bhatt said, while reflecting on the 19-year gap between the original film and its sequel.
The first Awarapan, which was released in 2007, was established as a very popular film with its emotional story, great music and Emraan Hashmi’s hard-hitting portrayal of Shivam. Bhatt said the filmmakers didn’t want to rush to make the sequel simply because the original was so popular. Instead, they waited until they felt that the story had gained the emotional connection and appreciation for Shivam’s story to continue.
