Kunickaa Sadanand is apparently taking a dig at Kangana Ranaut in the midst of the raging debate over Kriti Sanon’s Raksha Bandhan advertisement. The veteran actress reacted after an old jewellery campaign featuring Kangana resurfaced online, and social media users compared the actress-politician’s last appearance with her recent criticism of Kriti’s outfit.

The controversy started when a Raksha Bandhan campaign featuring Kriti Sanon started a debate on social media. In the advertisement for jewellery brand GIVA, Kriti was wearing a modern ensemble of a bralette-style blouse, a cape and a draped skirt. Many were happy with the look but some didn’t think it was appropriate for a campaign themed around the tradition of Raksha Bandhan.

Kangana Ranaut soon joined the conversation and expressed her disapproval of the advertisement. In a post on Instagram Stories she questioned why women are wearing revealing clothes when there is a variety of other ways of dressing. She also declared the advertisement was “intentionally creepy,” and that today there are cocktail dresses and jeans to wear and saris and salwar kameez.

Her comments were quickly a talking point and some social media users supported her view and others criticized her for judging another woman based on her clothing. While the debate was on, a famous Raksha Bandhan campaign with Kangana for jewellery brand Nakshatra resurfaced online.

Kangana in the old advertisement was wearing a strapless outfit with a plunging neckline. Because the campaign was re-released, people compared Kangana’s earlier fashion choices to her recent comments about Kriti’s appearance. Many called her hypocrisy, saying women have the right to choose what they wear and not be judged on their culture.

In the online conversation, Kunickaa Sadanand appeared to be joining the criticism. She posted a post with the old Kangana advertisement and wrote, “Mera kutta kutta, tera kutta Tommy???” The comment was widely interpreted as a commentary on the double standard being discussed online.

The phrase also resonated with the larger argument on whether celebrities should be judged differently for similar choices. Kangana’s fans kept arguing that although her comments were about the context of festival advertisement rather than women’s clothing in general, her critics felt that the resurfaced campaign weakened her argument.

Kriti Sanon also spoke out on the criticism of her GIVA advertisement. She didn’t just focus on what she thought was the meaning of Raksha Bandhan, she said. Festivals are about emotions and the significance people attach to traditions, not just the clothes, Kriti said.

Kriti also noted Raksha Bandhan is about protection and said she and her sister tie rakhi to each other because they believe they can protect one another just as a brother would. She also referred to her dogs as part of the family.

She also questioned the notion of measuring a woman’s respect for culture through her clothes. Ethnic fashion has evolved and cultural values are not determined by a woman’s neckline or outfit, she said. Her response expanded the debate from one advertisement to more general questions about fashion, tradition and societal expectations of women.

After the backlash, GIVA issued a statement saying the advertisement had been removed “out of respect” and the brand said it valued Indian culture, traditions and festivals.

The episode has now become a larger social media debate between Kangana, Kriti and now Kunickaa. While the original discussion was about the styling of a Raksha Bandhan advertisement, the resurfacing of Kangana’s older campaign has brought attention to perceived contradictions in celebrity commentary.

Kunickaa’s pointed answer has only fuelled the debate on whether celebrities should be held accountable for their own past fashion choices when commenting on similar choices made by others. Online we have seen for the third time the clash of fashion, cultural expectations and public scrutiny of women in the entertainment industry.
