Rajkummar Rao’s courtroom drama Prahaar -- The Untold Story of Ujjwal Nikam has finally received a date for theatrical release. The biographical film is set to be released on October 16, 2026, after having been scheduled on August 7. The date is in the festival season of Dussehra.
The movie was announced by Maddock Films, which announced the new date and poster with the message “Ab hoga justice ka PRAHAAR.” The movie is directed by Avinash Arun Dhaware and produced by Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films.

In Prahaar, Rajkummar Rao portrays Indian public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, whose career has been tied to many high-profile criminal trials. The film aims to explain both his professional path and challenges in handling some of the country’s most significant criminal cases.
The cast also includes Wamiqa Gabbi, Jaideep Ahlawat and Sikandar Kher as well as important actors. The film’s story is based on major cases handled by Nikam, including the 1993 Bombay bombings and the 2008 Mumbai attacks.
Why was the film put off?
Prahaar was originally scheduled for release on August 7, 2026, but the makers decided to move it to a later date. As August was already flooded with several major releases, it was difficult for a content-based courtroom drama to get a favourable theatrical window.
A September 4 release was also considered; on that day the film would be further from Mirzapur: The Movie’s release date. The producers now plan to go on the October 16 festive weekend, which will give promotion for the movie more time.

Although the Dussehra period is a potential great opportunity, Prahaar will face a competitive theatrical market. Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 and Dhanush’s Om will be in the market at the same time so a very busy box office weekend is expected.
Rajkummar Rao’s character Prahaar is another performance-driven project after all his successful movies in different genres. His transformation into Ujjwal Nikam has already generated some curiosity given that it is based on a real public figure with a long and successful legal career.
With the new October 16 release date, the filmmakers now have more time to get the word out about the film and to get the masses to understand Nikam’s story.
