The darkness has found its perfect face, and Yash is going to bring one of Indian mythology’s greatest villains to life in a movie. Yash will play Ravana in Nitesh Tiwari’s highly awaited Ramayana in its ambitious two-part adaptation, starring Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama and Sai Pallavi as Sita. After the first trailer has already attracted huge attention, the transformation of Yash into the cruel and threatening king of Lanka has become one of the most talked-about themes in the film.

Yash has also explained why he chose Ravana rather than Lord Rama. Speaking about the character and the central conflict of the epic, the actor explained the need for a contrast between good and evil. His comments reflect his belief that the greatness of Rama becomes more powerful when the story has an equally formidable embodiment of darkness. Yash said that Ravana’s evil too needs to be depicted strongly; it has to be that the antagonist is present in the story, not just the character who is a villain in the conventional sense.

Yash has become known for playing larger-than-life heroes and epic figures after the huge success of the KGF franchise. His performance of Rocky Bhai cemented him as one of the most popular action actors in Indian cinema. Ravana is quite a departure from the typical heroic image that people have held in their minds of him. Instead of the hero that people naturally like, Yash has chosen to play one of mythology’s most complex and powerful figures.

Yash has previously discussed the difficulty of portraying Ravana. The character has been interpreted by many actors on television, theatre, and cinema, so viewers already have a strong image of the character. As Yash put it, creating his interpretation while respecting the character’s established identity has added more pressure.

Yash’s transformation was displayed in the Ramayana trailer, which has just been released. Ravana is introduced as a commanding, regal, and intimidating figure, with all of his complexity, his outfit, his physicality and his intense expression. Rama and Ravana are also the two characters who are in conflict, and the result of which is in the end, and the two, as opposing sides of the story, are the ones who will decide the world’s destiny.

Nitesh Tiwari is directing, and Namit Malhotra is producing the ambitious film. Ranbir Kapoor is playing Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, and Yash as Ravana, with Ravi Dubey as Lakshman and Sunny Deol as Hanuman. The project has attracted high interest for its huge scale, special effects, and international reach. The filmmakers have positioned it as a movie and have presented it as a cinematic representation of the epic with world-class effects to see.

The visual scale of the project has also raised expectations. The trailer presents Ayodhya, Lanka, massive armies, mythical creatures, and huge battles; and the collaboration between Oscar-winning composers Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman is one of the greatest attractions. DNEG has handled the visual effects, further underlining the filmmakers’ ambition to create a globally competitive spectacle.

Interestingly, Yash’s Ravana and Ranbir Kapoor’s Rama are expected to have limited direct interaction in the first part of the film. Yash had announced that he and Ranbir did not have scenes together in the first instalment since the story is structured around the journeys of the two characters before they come to face each other.

For Yash, the role is more than just playing the villain. Ravana is a powerful, learned, and ambitious ruler whose pride and destructive choices are the cause of all this. Bringing those dimensions to the screen should give Yash a chance to play a character far removed from the action heroes of his past.

With Ramayana being such a big movie event, expectations surrounding Yash’s Ravana are enormous. The trailer has already been met with great fanfare, with many fans so impressed with his imposing screen presence and calling Ravana’s character one of the film’s most powerful portrayals—it’s certainly one of the film’s biggest moments. As the movie is getting closer to coming into cinemas and the audience is waiting for the epic to arrive, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: Yash is not just playing Ravana; he’s trying to create a modern version of the great king, one of the great foes that will remain with us for years to come and be remembered by generations.

The most menacing Ravana is coming, and if the early glimpses are any indication, Yash’s portrayal could become one of the defining performances of this ambitious retelling of the Ramayana.
