Charlize Theron was born on 7 August 1975 in Benoni, Gauteng, South Africa and grew up in a family that was into road construction. Her parents, Gerda Theron and Charles Theron, encouraged her from an early age. Theron became very much into ballet as a kid and wanted to become a professional dancer. It was her years of rigorous training that instilled the determination and work ethic that would later come to define her acting career.
Theron attended the National School of the Arts in Johannesburg before moving to Europe to pursue professional ballet. But a serious knee injury ended her dancing career. Not giving up on the performing arts she turned to modelling, which opened up opportunities in the United States.
After moving to Los Angeles, Theron’s life turned out to be quite different. A talent agent who was with her at a bank at the time noticed her in a heated discussion and recognized her natural presence on the screen and offered her a job in the entertainment industry, according to a well-known story. What started as a chance encounter soon turned out to be one of Hollywood’s best success stories.

Charlize Theron is the adoptive mother of two children and has often spoken about the importance of family. She is also a strong advocate for women’s rights, LGBTQ+ equality and social justice, and uses her global platform to promote inclusion and positive social change.
