Wai Ching Ho, who was the titan of Marvel’s Daredevil and was a star of the Marvel Television series, who played the enigmatic Madame Gao, has died at the age of 82, according to her family who confirmed the sad news in a statement to Variety.
Her family were so grateful in their time of loss, they did not want to mention her death but for all the support they are getting from people.
"Her family are deeply grateful for the wonderful outpouring of love and support and the multiple beautiful messages and memories people have spoken about our beloved Wat. It is comforting to us to know how much she meant to so many people,” the family said in the statement.
Ho went on to become an international star with her memorable portrayal of Madame Gao, one of Marvel’s most potent and enigmatic and feared villains in Netflix of all times. Her calm and intimidating presence made her one of the most important characters in Daredevil, and later in Iron Fist and The Defenders. Even though she spoke softly, Ho's performance was so powerful, and Madame Gao’s character was one of Marvel’s most memorable villains, so she had an undeniable voice.
After the news of her death reached social media platforms with tributes to her back and forth with her classics. She was like a boss in every scene she was in, and she commanded.
One fan wrote, “Wow, and I'm literally at the tail end of the OG Daredevil Netflix series. RIP to one of the goats in that show. She was such an amazing actor.”
Another had a touching personal memory after meeting Ho at a fan convention.
"I saw her at many a con years ago and got her autograph. She is a gifted woman with so much presence, such a sweet, intelligent and cheerful person to talk to! She told me how much it meant to her to have such a beloved role so late in her career. RIP to a legend!"
Born in Hong Kong, Wai Ching Ho had an incredible life over the years. Long before she was famous to Marvel fans, she had established herself as a great actor in theatre and television, and people loved her for her versatility and dedication to her craft.
Her filmography consists of Hustlers, Only Murders in the Building, and Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens. She also voiced the most popular character Grandma Wu in Pixar’s animated hit Turning Red, bringing her skills to an entirely new generation of viewers.
Ho appeared as a guest on popular TV shows (Law & Order, One Life to Live, Fresh Off the Boat). She could do dramatic, comedic, or mysterious characters and always made the most of her character to make viewers feel like she belonged.
As far away as possible, Ho was always deeply committed to theatre. Last year she appeared in the Off-Broadway production Laowang: A Chinatown King Lear. She had also appeared in Snow in Midsummer in 2022 and playwright-director Celine Song's critically acclaimed Endlings in 2020— proof of her ongoing passion for live performance.
Wai Ching Ho's death represents the end of an extraordinary artistic journey. And although a lot of people will forever regard her as the formidable Madame Gao, her legacy transcends the Marvel universe. She leaves behind such a rich body of work that demonstrates decades of hard work and resilience and great talent. And her stage, television, film, and animation work will continue to inspire fans as well as the performers.
