The horror genre has a new undisputed champion. Curry Barker’s Obsession has become the highest-grossing original horror movie of the 21st century (well above Get Out, The Conjuring, Hereditary, and Sinners). It began as a small independent production that has now become one of the biggest movie success stories of the last few years, proving that good storytelling can trump even the biggest studio productions.

Obsession was made on a very low budget of $750k and grossed more than $426 million worldwide, making it one of the most profitable horror movies. And the film’s success is even more impressive because it has very few actors and was directed by Curry Barker, who first appeared on YouTube before moving into feature filmmaking.

The film combines supernatural horror with psychological romance and a totally new kind of horror genre that’s resonated with the world. Barker became one of Hollywood’s hottest horror directors very soon after its success.

Obsession was acquired by Focus Features for $14 million after its Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) premiere and now seems to be one of the best independent films to date. That it’s a scary, emotional story with a shocking ending is exactly what you’d want from it.

They were relatively unknown actors at the time of the movie’s release: Inde Navarrette and Michael Johnston. Navarrette, who has made appearances in 13 Reasons Why and Superman & Lois, has delivered one of the best performances of this year, while Johnston’s portrayal of the troubled college student Bear has received praise.

The story is about Bear, a lonely college student who is consumed by his love for his friend Nikki. He wants to make her fall in love with him and he uses a mysterious supernatural toy based on an unnerving animated television series to get her to fall in love with him. But what starts out as a bid for her attention soon becomes frightening, as black magic can have terrible effects.

Nikki is being pulled more and more by dark forces and the line between love, obsession, and supernatural evil is starting to blur. The movie ends in a tragic and dark manner, as you have to wonder which has become more obsessed–Bear and why his desperation brought about the nightmare, or Nikki in becoming a villain to bring out the horror.

The big-scale success of Obsession has already paved the way for an expanding cinematic universe. Barker is working on a sequel but will not directly follow Bear and Nikki, and will instead create an anthology about the strange One Wish Willow, the very thing that causes us the horror of the original one.

The sequel is not expected to come out before 2028. Barker is also attached to direct Anything But Ghosts, another project set in the expanding Obsession universe and establishing him as one of the most exciting new voices in horror.

Fans who missed the theatrical release will soon be able to watch the blockbuster from home. Obsession will launch on Netflix in the U.S. on November 17, 2026, as part of an existing licensing agreement, What's on Netflix wrote. Release dates in other countries will depend on regional distribution rights.

In fact, Obsession has changed the way we have always watched horror movies and TV shows, and how to do so. From a shoestring independent production to an international hit and movie giant in the world of horror movies, Obsession has changed horror movies in the modern horror genre forever. It not only solidifies Curry Barker as a major filmmaker, but it also shows that original horror stories still keep the audience interested in an age of sequels and franchise movies.
