Tom Cruise Unveils Trailer for Digger, His Wildest Role Yet in Alejandro G. Iñárritu's Satirical Black Comedy

Tom Cruise has unveiled the first trailer for Digger, a satirical black comedy (produced by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu). Cruise plays an unconventional corporate executive and his actions trigger a global environmental crisis.

In Digger, Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, a charismatic but controversial CEO whose decisions cause a disastrous ecological collapse. As the planet falls apart, Rockwell is trying to repair the damage and convince the world that humanity can still be saved. The trailer combines biting satire, dark humor and jaw-dropping visuals to create a film unlike any Tom Cruise movie.

The trailer was made public on July 12 following a fan event and immediately made movie lovers and Cruise's fans very excited. One of the best scenes in it is Cruise speaking an emotionally charged monologue in front of a huge globe as scenes of melting ice caps, environmental destruction and worldwide panic play out around him.

Coupled with Cruise is a pretty diverse ensemble cast in which John Goodman plays the President of the United States. Riz Ahmed plays the part of a wise political adviser to the global crisis and the supporting cast has an excellent chance to include well-known actors in big roles that will bring life to the satire of the movie.

Director Alejandro G. Iñárritu (Birdman, The Revenant) is also the director who brings his storytelling style to Digger. It’s a biting social commentary combined with big-scale visual spectacle, and the themes include corporate responsibility, climate change, political leadership, and humanity’s struggle to confront its own failures.

Designed for the IMAX format, Digger promises a lot of beautiful cinematography and immersive visuals. The big-format presentation will only heighten the intensity of the emotional impact of the movie and its dramatic environmental collapse in the world, making it one of the most visually ambitious movies of the year.

Tom Cruise said Digger was one of the most challenging roles of his career. At 64, he said, it required emotional vulnerability, complex character development and a completely different acting style from the action-packed performances that have guided so much of his career.

Digger (set to release on Oct. 2) is already one of the most eagerly awaited Hollywood movies of the year. It also has an Oscar-winning director, a great supporting cast, timely environmental themes and Cruise himself playing one of his boldest characters to date, so it can inspire the audience as well as critics in the film. Digger is likely to be a worthy winner in awards recognition or box office success at the end of 2026, but at this point it is already just the most interesting movie we have to watch.
