Indian music has lost one of its most cherished voices as playback singer S. Janaki, known as the “Nightingale of South India.” She died in a private hospital in Mysuru after battling age-related health problems, and she was able to complete a musical career that lasted more than 60 years. Born as Sistla Sreeramamurthy Janaki, the great singer has become one of India’s most celebrated playback artists, singing more than 48,000 songs in more than 20 languages. She was equally appreciated in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi, and other Indian languages and is among the most versatile singers in the history of Indian cinema.
Janaki began her playback singing career in the late 1950s and quickly became a favorite among the leading music composers. She worked with such great composers as M.S. Viswanathan, K.V. Mahadevan, Ilaiyaraaja, A.R. Rahman, and many others. Her ability to articulate emotions in her voice made every song memorable, whether it was a romantic melody, devotional hymn, classical composition, folk tune, or emotional lullaby.
Her contribution to Indian music was immense, and she won four National Film Awards for Best Female Playback Singer and more than 30 state film awards from different state governments.
