Yash’s much-anticipated film ‘Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups’ has been a big hit with its big-screen, action-focused and Yash’s commanding screen presence.
And while audience attention has been on the large scale of the film and Yash’s performance, there has also been a conversation that’s happening in parallel that women have to be in the story with men as the main players of violence and power.
Yash has built a strong image as an action star, especially after the huge success of KGF. His portrayal of Rocky brought him the pan-Indian superstar status, and so he’s now a movie star who’s very much in the world of confidence, looks and larger-than-life characters. Toxic continues to support that and puts the actor in a setting of crime, power struggles and convoluted relationships.
But this film is now under much more discussion than whether Yash can dominate the screen. A film with such a strong male protagonist also has to provide its female characters with something of the same kind of emotional journey.
As Indian cinema has made strong female characters a bigger priority, the conversation is very relevant. Viewers are no longer content with seeing female characters in a film. People are looking for more than just a female protagonist and male protagonist, but characters who are motivated, have their own life-long conflicts and have more of an emotional arc as well.
Toxic has attracted much attention as an extremely dark and intense world, so relationships and power must be shown. Women can bring a different perspective to the world of violence, ambition and masculinity when a film deals with them.
Yash is surely one of the film’s main attractions. The actor has a substantial fan base that remains loyal to his work and the expectations for Toxic are high. His action and charismatic performance style are very much part of the movie’s marketing appeal.
But star power does not necessarily have to come at the expense of ensemble storytelling. Some of the most memorable films are those in which supporting characters have more depth and make you care about their individual journeys. In Toxic, meaningful female characters might give the film an additional dimension instead of just competing with the male lead.
The conversation also comes up with complicated masculinity in contemporary cinema. That is not to say that every action film needs to have the same formula. Films can be about male-driven stories and audiences still like movies that are built around strong action heroes. The point is not the same, but the diversity of perspective.
Toxic is another big chapter in his career after the KGF phenomenon for Yash. The film is big, but audiences want to see if the actor moves beyond Rocky in this film. A nuanced narrative might allow him to reach a new mode of screen presence with that intensity that his fans want.
Great female actors have also been involved in the project. What role they play and how their character arcs will be the point of their characters and how the film can make sense of its male protagonist and the ensemble.
The conversation about women’s representation is not limited to Toxic. In Indian cinema, filmmakers are encouraged to create female characters who are not limited to their relationship with male protagonists. Strong representation can take the form of ambitious, morally complex, flawed, humorous, powerful or emotionally independent characters.
And for filmmakers, that’s a creative opportunity and a challenge. A female character does not necessarily become strong because she’s in an action sequence or has powerful dialogue. Depth comes from character development, motivation and the ability to shape the story.
Toxic has the advantage of working in a visually ambitious world where questions of power and identity can be explored by multiple characters. If the women in the film are given narrative agency, they could have a significant emotional and thematic impact on the film.
At the same time, one must differentiate between expectations and the final film experience. Representation is often discussed in terms of advertising, trailers, songs, interviews and early impressions. The entire picture can be made sense of when an audience sees the movie in its fullness.
What is clear is that Yash’s star power has placed Toxic under such an intense spotlight. Not only is the movie an action spectacle but it’s also a reflection on contemporary thinking about masculinity, power and relationships.
The question is not whether Yash should dominate his own film. His commanding presence is one of the reasons audiences are excited about Toxic. The bigger question is whether that dominance can coexist with women who have equally compelling stories to tell.
But if Toxic brings Yash’s larger-than-life personality to life with characters at play within its ensemble, it’s more than spectacle. It could become a film in which action, ambition, masculinity and human relationships all combine for a richer cinematic experience.
For now, the debate itself shows how audience expectations are changing. People want the excitement of major stars and ambitious action, but they also want stories that give every major character a reason to matter. Toxic will make its way back to the forefront of the conversation for women and representation for Yash’s next film as well.
