Parvathy Thiruvothu Breaks Silence on Unfollowing Geetu Mohandas Amid Toxic Controversy
Malayalam actor Parvathy Thiruvothu has finally addressed the speculation about why she unfollowed director Geetu Mohandas on Instagram and put an end to the rumours of a rift between the two women.
The debate came back to life when Geetu’s new directorial project Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups with Yash was being debated on social media. So far Parvathy has always refused to turn it into a personal battle between two women.
The speculation dates back to the time when promotional materials for Toxic were being posted online. Meanwhile, Parvathy was no longer following Geetu on Instagram and it made people ask whether or not their relationship had deteriorated. Of course, Parvathy and Geetu were well-known to have been in the limelight for talking about gender representation and women’s rights in the Malayalam film industry. So the social-media change was immediately connected to Toxic.
But Parvathy has made it clear that she is not about to allow the unfollowing to become the basis for a larger narrative about conflict. In an interview with Galatta Plus she described the follow-unfollow episode as a way women were being pitted against one another. She said she was not interested in participating in such an account and that there was no meaningful news to be gained from the social-media action.
Parvathy also discussed the wider context of Women in Cinema Collective, or WCC. Both she and Geetu have been associated with the organisation and it has played a central role in the discussion about women's experiences and rights in Malayalam cinema. Parvathy says to reduce two women associated with WCC to a social-media follow or unfollow is to put their individual identities and experiences at odds.
Geetu should be allowed to make creative decisions as a filmmaker, said the actor. She said a director could also make a movie that might seem completely different from positions or conversations they have been involved with before. That creative decision belongs to the filmmaker, Parvathy said, and other people shouldn’t be automatically drawn into the discussion because they have an association with that person.
The debate has also brought back memories of the 2016 Kasaba debate. Parvathy had publicly criticised what she felt were misogynistic elements in the Mammootty-starrer and Geetu was by her side during the conversation and had urged her to name it. That old debate rekindled online during the Toxic debate in which Parvathy’s earlier position was questioned and Geetu’s new film was put forward. Parvathy, however, has maintained that she still stands by her criticism of Kasaba.
At the same time, Parvathy has separated her personal stance from Geetu’s creative freedom. She has argued that Geetu has wide-ranging experience in the world of cinema and should be able to make her own artistic decisions. Rather than presenting the situation as a conflict between two women, Parvathy would like audiences and commentators to judge the film on its own and to judge it against the basis of what the woman has to say.
However, Toxic has kept the two names linked with online discussion. The film is directed by Geetu Mohandas and led by Yash and has been criticized for its portrayal of women and some promotional material. The English version of the film was released in theatres on September 4, 2026, after its original theatrical release in August.
Parvathy's most recent comments seem less about explaining a social-media act and more about challenging the way women in the film industry are often depicted against each other. Professional relationships, creative choices and personal social-media decisions shouldn't turn into a public feud, her message is.
The actor has also made it very clear she doesn’t want to say things that could overshadow the film. She has stressed Toxic as a movie and as an independent piece of cinema that audiences can see by themselves. And so her comments have turned the conversation away from unfollowing on Instagram and more towards the larger conversation about how female filmmakers and actors are treated in the entertainment industry.
For now, the speculation around Parvathy and Geetu is not going to disappear entirely, particularly given their history and the renewed attention on Toxic. But Parvathy’s answer is clear: she doesn’t want to see their relationship reduced to an Instagram follow-unfollow or story of two women fighting against each other.
