Taapsee Pannu’s eagerly awaited action thriller ‘Gandhari’ is in trouble with the plagiarism and copyright charges just days before its Netflix release date.
Writer Kalyan Bandi has claimed the movie’s plot is close to a script he wrote and registered in 2019.
According to reports, Bandi wrote and registered a story called Gandhari in 2019 and approached industry professionals with the idea. He is saying that the film’s idea is very similar to the old work.
He raised the issue when Netflix announced Taapsee Pannu’s movie and later issued a legal notice to the makers.
Bandi’s claim has brought attention to the film’s central premise. Gandhari is about Taapsee as a mother who is on a high-risk mission when her daughter is kidnapped.
A mother's determination, revenge, and her fight with a criminal network is the central theme. Netflix had already described the movie as an action thriller based on the love relationship between a mother and a child.
The writer has filed a claim for 40 lakh rupees and a prize in the name of the concept. His claims have revived much of the discussion online on the nature and protection of the works of authors in the entertainment industry.
The film's makers, however, had the movie’s makers strongly deny plagiarism. Kathha Pictures, the production banner behind Gandhari, said that it is an original film written and produced by Kanika Dhillon.
They denied any claim made by the production house that the movie copied another person’s concept or title and advised people not to treat unverified allegations as fact.
Kanika Dhillon is credited as the writer and producer, while Devashish Makhija is the director. Taapsee Pannu is in charge of the film, Ishwak Singh and Swastika Mukherjee as well.
The film reunites Taapsee and Dhillon who have worked together on a few projects.
I think Gandhari is a film with an entire audience when it will launch on Netflix September 3, 2026.
The plagiarism allegations are still not proven and have not been factually proven but the controversy could cause more attention for the movie to be released on Netflix just before it gets here.
For now, the fight is between the writer’s claims and the production house’s denial.
