Netflix is supposedly pulling the plug on the much-discussed American spin-off of its global phenomenon Squid Game, which was to be directed by the celebrated filmmaker David Fincher.
The news has left fans disappointed because Fincher was to have been able to show the dark story and the survival drama of the South Korean series in a dark mood to the masses and it was a huge hit of the world.
The American adaptation had been in the news since news that David Fincher was in talks to develop an English-language extension of the Squid Game universe. Netflix never officially announced many details about the project, but industry sources said the respected director was involved very early on.
Creative and strategic reasons are now being put behind the project. Netflix is now assessing its investment strategy for large-budget franchise expansion as audience preferences change and production costs are mounting.
So it will concentrate on telling original stories and not spin off every successful intellectual property into a number of spin-offs.
Another factor is scheduling conflicts with David Fincher. The filmmaker has so many other projects in the works right now that it’s hard for him to commit to a long production time to make the kind of big television shows that he wants to do.
Netflix is not rushing the project and has stopped development completely.
The cancellation also shows Netflix’s careful planning to keep Squid Game’s legacy alive. The original Korean series was a cultural landmark and broke streaming records and won international awards.
An American remake or spin-off would bring comparisons with the original that would hurt the brand if it didn’t deliver in your eyes.
Social media users are divided on the cancellation. Some people were excited about Fincher bringing his own cinematic style to the franchise, while others liked the original series as it was and felt like Korea needs to make its own Korean movie without adding more than one.
So the cancellation has both disappointed and relieved viewers.
David Fincher, in addition to being one of Hollywood’s most recognized directors, has also directed movies like Se7en, Fight Club, Gone Girl, and The Social Network, and his past work with Netflix, including Mindhunter, House of Cards, and The Killer, has received very positive reviews, making fans very much excited to have him involved in Squid Game.
Despite the cancellation, Netflix is not yet saying whether or not the Squid Game franchise is ending. However, the streaming giant is looking at opportunities to continue to make a few more episodes of the popular series in future installments, even though the next few episodes may take a different creative direction than what was originally planned for the series.
And for now, fans still hoping to see David Fincher’s version of Squid Game will be forced to accept that the ambitious project has been shelved before production has begun.
