Taapsee Pannu returns with another intense and emotionally charged role and this time she’s putting herself into the shoes of a mother who will go to all lengths to find her missing daughter. Netflix has released the trailer of "Gandhari", an upcoming action-thriller that mixes mystery, suspense and high drama and an intimate look at motherhood. In the trailer, viewers see Bani, played by Taapsee, whose peaceful life is shattered as her daughter is kidnapped under mysterious circumstances.
Instead of waiting for the authorities to solve the case, Bani takes the decision to take care of it by herself. Her determination turns into a dangerous mission when she ventures into the fictional town of Joypurra. What initially seems like a simple search for a missing child quickly grows to something much darker as Bani learns secrets and goes up against people who may know what is happening to her daughter.
The trailer creates a very unsettling atmosphere in Joypurra and portrays its town as a place where appearances can be deceptive. Its cultural background and Behrupiyas are all so intriguing we could not help but feel that it adds even more to the mystery. Bani is starting to find connections that make her daughter’s disappearance seem like it is connected to a much larger and much more sinister story.
At the heart of "Gandhari" is Taapsee’s portrayal of Bani. Her character is not presented as a typical action hero who has an amazing ability. And so her strength is in her struggle and desperation to protect her child. In the trailer she is still fighting against all kinds of challenges and so many people and always putting herself at risk in search of an answer.
This ties the action in "Gandhari" to its emotional story. And Bani’s refusal to accept that her daughter may be gone seems to have created every conflict. It is through a mother’s instinct that she goes about her work but the more she goes the more complicated the story grows. The trailer therefore promises an action film in which the emotional stakes are as high as the physical ones.
The cast also adds another layer to the mystery. Ishwak Singh plays Gokul, another parent whose daughter has also disappeared. His presence suggests that Bani’s personal tragedy may not be an isolated incident. Jatin Sarna is Kabir, the police officer who is leading the investigation, and Swastika Mukherjee, Mita Vashisht and Chhaya Kadam are also part of that ensemble.
The presence of more than one person in the investigation could make the film’s mystery even deeper. While Bani is determined to find out the truth on her own terms, the police investigation may take a different course. The gulf between official procedure and a mother’s persistent search could be one of the central themes of the movie’s story as these cases could have a parent’s desperate search on her own and the parents’ desperate search might be a family dynamic.
Directed by Devashish Makhija and co-produced and written by Kanika Dhillon, "Gandhari" is another collaboration of Taapsee with Dhillon. Their association has already been the basis for strong female characters and complex emotional stories (see for example) so we see that it’s one of their most eagerly awaited films for those who like high-octane Hindi-language thrillers.
The trailer also suggests "Gandhari" will explore broader themes than a “normal” missing person investigation. Motherhood, sacrifice, courage, grief and perseverance all seem to be part of Bani’s journey. Her search for her daughter gradually becomes a battle against forces that seem determined to keep the truth hidden.
With its mysterious setting and emotional core and action-driven presentation, "Gandhari" is positioning itself as a thriller that combines suspense with character-driven storytelling. Taapsee’s physical demands only heighten the sense that Bani’s journey is emotionally and physically challenging.
The film will be broadcast exclusively on Netflix on September 3, 2026. And with the trailer out there now, the mystery of what happened to Bani’s daughter is likely to become more and more obvious and how far she will go to bring her home. And so "Gandhari" gives Taapsee Pannu a chance to tell a powerful, unconventional female-driven story with action and mystery and the emotional force of a mother’s resolve.
