A much-anticipated collaboration between Ajith Kumar and director Shankar may not happen after all. Shankar is reportedly interested in directing Ajith in a future project but the actor is not comfortable with taking up a film that can be done in a big time, with a long and physically demanding production schedule.
According to the report, there is no conflict between the two stars. Ajith and Shankar have a very good friendship and that equation will remain true. But Ajith feels that Shankar's filmmaking process involves high standards and a very elaborate execution. So, Ajith thinks working together may not be possible with the physical requirements of such a project.
The speculation comes soon after the possibility of Shankar directing Ajith had generated great excitement among Tamil cinema fans. They had never been able to work with each other despite both having a huge potential in the industry. So Ajith’s huge popularity and Shankar’s big-budget style had become a very much talked about thing.
Shankar is looking for a quicker commercial entertainer before moving forward with his ambitious Velpaari project. The director has long described Velpaari, based on Su. Venkatesan's historical novel, as his dream project. It was recently reported that the project was in pre-production but the details about the cast and production schedule have changed.
Velpaari is expected to be a big historical drama and already in the past has been discussed as a multi-part film. At various points in time there have been some names linked to this project but no official announcement has been made on the whole cast as well as no picture of the movie. This uncertainty has brought the project to the fore of Tamil cinema audience.
Ajith, for his part, continues to focus on his existing slate and his upcoming projects. The actor has increasingly been selective about what kind of movies and schedules he takes on, as is well known due to his commitments outside cinema and motorsport interests. A physically demanding project with a long build up time can be difficult to work on.
If the latest reports are true fans may have to wait longer for an Ajith Kumar-Shankar combination. But the decision seemed to be based on practical reasons rather than personal disputes. They are friends no matter what happens to their film.
For now Shankar’s immediate plans and the eventual form of Velpaari are one of the most closely watched developments in Tamil cinema. An Ajith-Shankar film was an exciting possibility but with time, production and creative constraints the two celebrated people might not get together for the moment.
