Arun Matheswaran’s DC marks the acting debut of the director Lokesh Kanagaraj who takes on the lead role along with Wamiqa Gabbi. The movie is a gritty romantic action thriller but it is a story based on Devdas. With the Lokesh-Arun team and Anirudh Ravichander's music, the movie has created huge expectations from people.
DC (short for Devadas and Chandra) is about Rebel Devadas, a man trapped in a violent world of gang wars, betrayal and revenge. When he crosses paths with Chandra, their relationship becomes the emotional core of the film. Love, loyalty and survival collide as Devadas faces strong enemies while trying to save the people closest to him. The story is told in the style of Arun Matheswaran’s gritty storytelling; there’s high intensity action and high stakes situations.
Performances
Lokesh Kanagaraj makes the bold acting debut as the lead actor and comes across as a tough and solid actor for the dark mood of the film. If he does get lost at times, he doesn’t let the movie get to the end.
Wamiqa Gabbi gives a strong performance and does a good job of conveying the emotional depth of her character at the same time as a film with a lot of violence. The supporting cast of Guru Somasundaram and Sharath Ravi also make a lot of effort in the story.
Direction & Technical Aspects
Arun Matheswaran once again displays his flair for stylish action and atmospheric filmmaking. The film has wonderful visual elements, sleek cinematography and realistic action choreography. But the screenplay is sometimes more style-driven than emotional and the second half could have benefited from tighter pacing.
Anirudh Ravichander’s music and background score are the film’s greatest strengths, elevating action scenes as well as emotional ones. The technical departments (cinematography and editing) deliver a polished theatrical experience.
What Works
Lokesh Kanagaraj’s first acting performance. Good action sequences with good visuals. The background score by Anirudh Ravichander is really good. Production quality is very good. Fantastic chemistry between the lead pair.
What Doesn’t Work
Extremely violent content may not appeal to all audiences. Emotional moments could have been developed further. Slightly uneven pacing in the latter half.
Final Verdict
DC is a visually striking action drama which manages to develop Lokesh Kanagaraj as lead actor and keep Arun Matheswaran’s style of filmmaking alive and well. While the violence and the familiar narrative may not be enough to make it work for everyone, the performances, technical brilliance and action are all quite good enough to make it a good theatrical experience for those fans of high-end commercial cinema.
