Rajinikanth’s upcoming movie Dharman is going on at a brisk pace and director Ashwath Marimuthu tells me that the shooting should be finished by October 2026.
The update has brought the fans back to life and they are excited to see the veteran Rajinikanth in a contemporary commercial entertainer. Marimuthu has said Rajinikanth is a “Gen Z vibe” when the film is made, so it will have the big screen presence of the actor but a modern look.
Dharman is directed by Ashwath Marimuthu who has come up with films like Oh My Kadavule and Dragon. The project is financed by Kamal Haasan’s Raaj Kamal Films International and Red Giant Movies is making it. Anirudh Ravichander is composing the music, and Simran and Raashii Khanna are among the actors.
The latest shooting update comes at an important stage for the film. As per Marimuthu, two schedules are already completed and the team is working towards wrapping the remaining parts in October. The second schedule started earlier this month and the production house gives an official update with Rajinikanth and the director on the sets.
One of the most talked about talking points around the project is Marimuthu’s description of Rajinikanth’s energy. The director told me the superstar is “Gen Z vibe” working on Dharman. Rajinikanth, one of the most experienced actors in Indian cinema’s history and one of the most successful actors, is still working with younger filmmakers and adapting to what audiences are looking for and want from them.
Marimuthu has worked with younger actors like Ashok Selvan and Pradeep Ranganathan before. Speaking of his experience with Rajinikanth he says that the actor is very warm and professional. He said working with him has been a joyous experience for him as well as very sweet.
The director has also talked about the responsibility of making a movie with Rajinikanth and produced by Kamal Haasan. But rather than seeing his opportunity as luck, Marimuthu has described it as a responsibility because many young filmmakers wish to work with two of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars. He has said Dharman will be a fun and entertaining affair with a new generation of actors and actresses.
The film itself has been a curiosity since its launch. Dharman was previously described as a family thriller with commercial elements. Marimuthu had also said that project would take inspiration from the styles of Padayappa and Vettaiyaadu Vilayaadu, combining Rajinikanth’s mass appeal with a thriller-oriented narrative.
The first-look material further fuelled interest in the movie. Rajinikanth was presented in a medical setting, which only fuels speculation and curiosity about his character. The production has consciously kept interest going on in the story and the superstar’s role, so each new update is closely followed by fans.
With the second schedule already in place and the production team planning for October, they will turn their attention to post-production and the future release plans. After principal photography is complete, they will be editing, music, visual work and other finishing stages.
Rajinikanth is working on various projects. The shooting of Jailer 2 has been completed and Dharman is still in production, he recently confirmed. He has also talked about a future collaboration with Kamal Haasan which will add another big project to his already busy schedule.
But for Dharman, the immediate priority is to complete the shoot as planned. With the team’s October 2026 target, they have a very clear production goal and they can move to the next step of creating and making films without any kind of delay.
