Thalapathy Vijay’s eagerly awaited last film Jana Nayagan has seen a big drop in the box office on the second day following a huge opening and was not only a flop in India. The film received a total of ₹21.15 crore net on India’s first Friday in the box office while earning a total of ₹42.70 crore net.

With this, Jana Nayagan's total India net collection reaches ₹63.85 crore, while its gross collection is around ₹75 crore after two days.
Tamil version still leads
The Tamil version still remained the biggest contributor to the film's earnings and received ₹17.95 crore on Day 2. The Hindi dubbed version came in at ₹1.85 crore and the Telugu version at ₹1.35 crore. The movie was on 12,190 shows on Friday and still on the list of films released at 12,190 shows despite the drop in numbers.
Although the second-day decline is large, the film is still showing solid numbers and is still a pretty good film, because of Vijay's huge fan base.
Grand Celebrations Marked the Release
Vijay's last film was met with massive fanfare in Tamil Nadu because fans were so excited about Vijay's film. Special cultural performances held at Woodlands and Casino in Chennai were given special cultural performances, and laser shows illuminated the night sky in tribute to the actor. The fans danced, cheered and whistled like children at first-day-first-show screenings during the screenings too.
Ravi Mohan also joined the fans in celebrating Vijay's final film. But despite the upbeat atmosphere and the impressive opening, mixed word-of-mouth and critical reviews seem to have affected the film’s second day performance.
About Jana Nayagan
Jana Nayagan, is directed by H. Vinoth, tells the story of Vetri (Vijay), a prisoner serving a prison sentence for an undisclosed crime. His bond with prison warden Srikanth leads him and his daughter Viji to not only help her deal with the pressure but encourage her to face her fears and become an officer in the Indian army.
As Vetri’s dark past resurfaces, he is confronted by the dangerous John Himmler played by Bobby Deol.
The film also features Mamitha Baiju, Pooja Hegde, Prakash Raj, and Bobby Deol. The film was originally planned for release in January but there were certification issues with CBFC and the film was postponed to finally be played in theatres.
Mixed Reviews Affect Momentum
While Jana Nayagan got packed theatres and wild fan emotions and an enthusiastic response, critical reception has been divided with Jana Nayagan. Vijay was praised for his presence and emotional moments, but the narrative was so inconsistent and not clear, said several reviewers. The mixed response seems to have contributed to the dramatic drop in the second day collections.
Even in the face of the slowdown, the film has crossed ₹63.85 crore net in India in just two days and it is going to have to depend on weekend footfalls to keep its box office momentum going.
