Jason Sanjay has spoken about his decision to take up filmmaking and the help he got from his father. Jason has watched his father work in the film industry for so long now, and at one point cinema was always his favourite thing and was right about that from a kid.
Jason, when he was talking about his decision to pursue filmmaking professionally, said he wanted to go overseas and become independent and study filmmaking. As he told his father, his father had nothing to say. His father was the first person to push him to go after what he wanted to do.
Jason recalled that his father was especially thrilled to hear of the large number of specialised courses for students interested in cinema. Instead of telling him that he was not going to be able to pursue a different profession, he wanted him to learn more about films and become familiar with it.
He remembered his dad’s simple advice: “Nee poi pannu,” which translated to “You go and do it.” His father also said a filmmaking course would give him a better understanding of the craft and give him a better perspective.
Jason said this encouragement influenced his decision to go independent in film production. Jason could have had a father who was in the industry and had an extensive background in films, but he came to know cinema on his own, and through that, he learned how different filmmaking techniques work.
The director’s comments also underscore the value of family support in pursuing a creative career. His father, instead of pushing him into a career in film production, let Jason go to the movies and encouraged him to get started to learn the craft before he got into it.
Jason will always have a strong relationship with cinema as a filmmaker in his youth and the beginning with his father's encouragement, and how he is now looking to make his mark behind the camera and start a career in film.
