Before Sigma, Jason Sanjay Took Vijay’s Approval – Father’s Encouragement Gave Him the Confidence to Direct
Jason Sanjay, son of actor-politician Vijay, is set to make his directorial debut with Sigma, a heist drama that has already generated significant buzz in Tamil cinema. Although most expected him to step in front of the camera like his father, Jason took the opposite path, and before he made that leap, he sought approval from the people who really mattered.
Jason Sanjay explained in a recent interview with Ananda Vikatan that before writing the first scene of Sigma, he narrated the entire story to his family, including his father Vijay, mother Sangeetha, sister, and a close circle of friends. The strong support from his family was one of the main reasons for him to move forward with the project.
Vijay's Approval Gave Jason Confidence
Jason said he listened to all his family members react positively when he told the story.
"I talked to everyone—my parents, my sister, and my friends. They were all very positive, and that really kind of gave me a lot of energy. That was the first thing that made me realize how much faith they had in me," he said.
Jason told me that the family’s support raised his confidence and reassured him that he was making the right career choice.
That was one of the biggest things that motivated Sigma, he said.
Industry Wishes Poured In
Jason received warm wishes from several key personalities in the Tamil film industry once Sigma officially went on floors.
He said Vijay Sethupathi, Soori, and many others had extended their best wishes for his first directorial venture.
Jason also said he was lucky to get encouragement from several of the top people in the industry, making his first filmmaking journey even more memorable.
Why Jason Chose Direction Over Acting
Although he is the son of one of Tamil cinema’s biggest superstars, Jason Sanjay has always maintained that his passion lies in filmmaking rather than acting.
Interestingly, he also said he even got an acting offer from the acclaimed filmmaker Alphonse Puthren, who directed Premam. But Jason politely declined because he wanted to pursue his dream of being a filmmaker.
Instead of stepping into his father’s shoes as an actor, Jason decided to build his own identity behind the camera.
Learning Filmmaking in Canada
Jason studied filmmaking in Canada to prepare himself for the field of storytelling and gain technical knowledge and practical exposure.
In the interview, he said the whole process helped him to understand many aspects of filmmaking in various ways—screenplay writing, direction, and visual storytelling.
His education abroad helped him to realize that filmmaking was what he truly wanted to pursue.
Why a Heist Drama?
Many expected Jason's debut to be a romantic entertainer, considering his young age. However, he surprised everyone by choosing a heist thriller as his first project.
Jason said that he wanted his first film to be interesting, stylish, and different from conventional commercial cinema.
As a result, rather than playing it safe, he chose a genre that would challenge him creatively and allow him to showcase his storytelling abilities.
