Nayanthara Recalls Her First Paycheque: ‘I Was Paid Just Rs 2,000-3,000’

Nayanthara is now one of the most popular and successful actresses in India in the film industry. Her career spans Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi films, but her start-up started with a much smaller salary.

The actor recently recalled her early career and said she was earning only around Rs 2,000- Rs 3,000 from one of her first professional assignments.

Nayanthara was asked about her first job and her first salary by Pearle Maaney. She said that she was involved with a Vanitha cover shoot and a fashion programme.

The assignment was one of the earliest steps in a career that would eventually make her one of the most recognisable female stars in South Indian cinema.

Nayanthara Never Planned To Become An Actor

Indeed, acting was not part of Nayanthara’s original career plans.

She was working as a model prior to getting into films. Her entry into cinema came when filmmaker Sathyan Anthikad noticed her photo in Vanitha magazine.

The director approached her for his Malayalam film Manassinakkare, which marked Nayanthara's acting debut in 2003.

What started as an unexpected opportunity eventually changed the course of her life and career.

Nayanthara appeared in a number of films after her debut, including Vismayathumbathu and Natturajavu. She later moved on to Tamil cinema with Ayya in 2005.

From A Small Paycheque To A Major South Indian Star

Nayanthara’s career transformed after her early movies. Chandramukhi was one of the major milestones in which she appeared with superstar Rajinikanth.

The film increased her visibility and proved she would be able to work on big commercial projects as an actress.

She subsequently appeared in several popular and critically appreciated films including Billa, Maya, Naanum Rowdy Dhaan and Kolamaavu Kokila.

Nayanthara has also taken on women-led projects and characters over the years that let her go beyond conventional commercial roles.

Bollywood Debut With Shah Rukh Khan

Nayanthara eventually made her Bollywood debut with Jawan in 2023, opposite Shah Rukh Khan.

Directed by Atlee, the action entertainer was a box office success and introduced Nayanthara to a much bigger audience in the country.

Her Bollywood debut was the next significant step in a career that had established her as a leading name in South Indian cinema.

Nayanthara’s Upcoming Films

The actress has several projects that are gaining interest with the audience.

She will be seen in the anticipated Tamil romantic drama Hi, with Kavin playing the lead, and the film is made by debutant Vishnu Edavan. The film will be released on August 28, 2026.

Nayanthara also has Toxic, where she shares the screen with Kannada superstar Yash. The film is directed by Geetu Mohandas and will be released on August 26, 2026.

The back-to-back releases will be of great interest during the upcoming festive season.

A Journey That Began With Rs 2,000-3,000

Nayanthara’s recollection of her first earnings is quite interesting and tells her life story in the entertainment industry.

She’s now one of the biggest female stars in the industry, and has gone from earning around Rs 2,000-3,000 for a modelling job as a teenager to one of the biggest female stars in the industry today.
