Rajinikanth's Coolie has gone a year since it was released and the Tamil superstar is getting lots of love on social media for his action-packed movie. The movie was directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and has music by Anirudh Ravichander and released on 14th August 2025.
The anniversary has prompted fans to recall some of the most memorable moments from the film such as Rajinikanth’s mass action sequences, signature style, dance moves and smoking scenes.
Sun Pictures, the production house behind Coolie, also shared an unseen still of Rajinikanth from the film, giving fans another reason to celebrate the movie's first anniversary.
Coolie made a massive opening.
Coolie generated huge box office excitement from its opening day. It had one of the biggest worldwide openings for a Tamil film, and reported high-performing international markets for it.
The movie earned more than $8.75 million grossing over the world in overseas markets and North America remained a crucial market for Rajinikanth-starrer.
The strong opening showed the huge theatrical pull Rajinikanth still enjoys to many audiences in Tamil Nadu and around the world.

A big part of Coolie was Rajinikanth's character and presentation. Lokesh Kanagaraj made several sequences that were designed to give a sense of the superstar’s larger-than-life screen presence in his movie.
Fans continue to share clips and images of Rajinikanth’s action scenes, stylish mannerisms and dance moments. His smoking scenes also became a big talking point, generating appreciation from fans and discussion among viewers.
The movie also featured a special title card to celebrate Rajinikanth’s 50 years in cinema and was very emotional for his fans. His five-decade career in the Indian film industry has made it that much more significant.
Mixed Reviews, Strong Box Office
Coolie got mixed reviews from critics and audiences but remained strong commercially. The film attracted huge audiences and had a big theatrical momentum.
The film also showed once again that critical reception does not always correlate with box office success. While critics were critical of certain aspects, Rajinikanth's star power, Lokesh Kanagaraj's filmmaking style, and the film's action-packed presentation helped drive people to theaters.
The film was also awarded an A certificate, which makes it one of the major adult-rated Tamil commercial movies to achieve huge box office success.
