From ₹20 Daily Wage to ₹25 Crore Per Film: The Incredible Journey of Tamil Actor Soori
Soori has moved from doing the daily job of an average salary of ₹20 per day to becoming one of the most famous and popular lead actors in Tamil cinema and he does so in a very good way. Soori is a special actor with a very different look, simple and natural acting ability and has evolved from being a popular comedian and supporting artiste to a bankable lead actor.
Today, reports about his remuneration running into several crores for a film reflect just how dramatically his career has changed. But behind the success is a long journey filled with financial hardship, odd jobs and years of waiting for an opportunity in the film industry.
Born in Madurai in 1977 in a financially troubled home, Soori moved to Tiruppur to find work at a young age. He worked as a daily-wage labour and acquired various skills to support himself and his family in the early 1990s.
Soori earned only around ₹20 a day. And despite his poverty, he had a duty to his family. He remembered that he would send about ₹140 home every week. Life was hard for him, but he continued to hope that he would enter film production.
One thing he wasn’t ready to let go of was his love for cinema and movies that show superstar Rajinikanth. Soori would save up money to watch Rajinikanth movies even when his money was very limited. There were times when he was reported to have sacrificed a meal to have money to see his favourite actor on screen.
His admiration for Rajinikanth eventually drove the decision to move to Chennai. In 1997, Soori was in the city with a dream of entering the Tamil film industry.
His first appearance was in 1998 as an extra in the Tamil film Maru Malarchi. It was an insignificant thing to do in front of a crowd, no dialogue or role to play. But Soori’s presence in the film was an important starting point.
Not to give up after getting only a couple of small opportunities, he continued to stay connected to the industry, and his experience with electrical and carpentry work was valuable. Soori was working with film units in different capacities, including as a lightman and carpenter.
These behind-the-scenes jobs allowed him to observe filmmaking closely. He could watch actors, directors and technicians at work while continuing to pursue his own dream of being an actor.
The road to recognition was not so smooth. Soori began to take small roles and work anonymously and eventually became a comedian and supporting actor. His comic timing and innocent-looking image drew the attention of the Tamil audience.
But Soori started to show us that his skill set is beyond comedy. His more serious performances made him a different person as an actor. Films like Vennila Kabaddi Kuzhu and later projects made him familiar and his move to emotionally demanding lead roles changed his career dramatically.
His performance in Viduthalai Part 1 was very much what I could see as his potential to be a serious leading actor. And Soori was made in a completely different light in the film and that was a watershed moment in his development as a performer.
So the transformation from a ₹20-a-day worker to a leading actor commanding a reported multi-crore remuneration is more than money; it is decades of persistence and a refusal to abandon a dream despite repeated obstacles.
Soori’s story also demonstrates how success in cinema does not always happen overnight. Before his fans saw him as a star, he had already spent years working in difficult circumstances and taking whatever opportunities came his way.
His journey from Madurai to Tiruppur and eventually Chennai reflects the determination of an aspiring actor who was willing to work in almost any capacity to stay close to the world of cinema.
Soori’s versatility and his ability to move from comedy to drama and heavy character-based performances is still well-known today. But the hard times of his early life are still very much in his story.
From earning ₹20 a day and sending money home to reportedly commanding around ₹25 crore per film, Soori’s career is a great example of how persistence, patience, and talent can totally change a person’s fortunes.
