Thalapathy Vijay has added another box office blockbuster as his latest political action drama Jana Nayagan was launched to over ₹78-80 crore around the world on the first day. This is the biggest opening for a Tamil movie in 2026 and indicates Vijay’s great popularity in India and overseas.

Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan stars Vijay as a former police officer who takes on a corrupt political system. The film also stars Pooja Hegde as the lead and Bobby Deol as the antagonist, and Anirudh Ravichander’s music has made the release a little more entertaining.
Tamil Nadu was the film's largest market and theatres were full of people in the early morning. Trade estimates of the film (around ₹37 crore net revenue) on its opening day, the film attracted 40 lakhs of fans in the state. It attracted fans from all over the country who gathered outside theaters to celebrate the film with drum performances, fireworks and special fan shows, and the film's debut was a big festival.
The excitement was also evident online, where Jana Nayagan reached 600,000 ticket sales on BookMyShow, one of the platform's biggest ticket-selling Tamil releases this year. Advance bookings were strong all day and premium formats and multiplexes had very good occupancy.
The film’s impressive opening was a big deal in itself because it had already met its big problem before it was released. The producers were sued in April after a full HD version of the movie leaked online. Police were investigating and arrests were made and anti-piracy measures were strengthened ahead of the theatrical release. But the audience stayed the same.
Supporters on social media wrote tributes to Vijay on Vijay’s long-term career as an actor in Tamil cinema. Many celebrated Vijay’s remarkable journey in Tamil cinema on social media. Many had such glowing memories of Jana Nayagan as a big achievement for the actor’s journey as a career in Tamil cinema, and many remembered the actor’s two decades of delivering huge hits and memorable performances.
The critical reception has been mixed. Vijay’s charismatic performance, powerful action scenes, and strong action sequences came to mind but there were some viewers who felt the script was at times not consistent in its pacing. But still, audiences have been positive and if the film attracts more people to watch, word of mouth will help keep it moving forward with its momentum to the weekend.
The excellent opening is a good start for a successful theatrical run, trade analysts say. If the movie continues to attract family audiences and continues to keep the occupancy levels, it could be among the highest-grossing Tamil films of the year.
Jana Nayagan has been able to start its box office journey with an estimated ₹78–80 crore worldwide opening. Thalapathy Vijay’s box office appeal is once again in evidence and set up for what could be one of the biggest commercial successes of 2026.
