Vijay’s Jana Nayagan Records ₹10.6 Crore Advance Booking Collection Ahead of July 23 Release
The countdown has begun for what could be one of the biggest cinematic events of the year. Thalapathy Vijay’s eagerly awaited swansong, Jana Nayagan, has already received ₹10.6 crore in advance bookings across India which shows just how big the show to which he will go on the silver screen in his last appearance before he enters politics.
The political action entertainer will be released on July 23 and fans get to rejoice after nearly seven months of waiting for fans to see it. But while the delay and some obstacles along the way have been a bit of a bane for fans, they are looking forward to it, in a way this is just going to be a great thing and the people seem to be very happy about it.
The recent trade reports indicate Jana Nayagan has sold over 4.35 lakh tickets in more than 4,300 scheduled shows across the country. Industry experts expect advance booking of the film will rise in the last few days before the film is released as more theatres open reservations and premium-format screenings are made available.
The film’s pre-release business has been largely driven by South India. Tamil Nadu is the biggest market at present with nearly ₹4.9 crore in advance ticket sales. Vijay’s popularity is huge in his home state and people of Tamil Nadu have been waiting for a big celebration for the actor’s last film.
Karnataka is currently the second largest market and has contributed to the film’s advance collection up to ₹3 crore. Most of this success has been achieved in Bengaluru, which is now the biggest city for the film. The city alone has generated around ₹3 crore in advance bookings, far surpassing traditional Tamil cinema centers.
Chennai is still in fast growth and has already recorded over ₹1 crore in advance sales, and occupancy levels are at record heights in most theatres. Many other cities like Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Kochi, Madurai, and Thiruvananthapuram are also experiencing demand and there is a great appetite in southern India.
From the language side of things, the Tamil version is currently in the top box office. Almost all advance booking revenue so far is from Tamil-language screenings, with Telugu versions coming up much less. Hindi has not been able to make much headway. And most of the bookings so far are in 2D shows.
The ticket sales are strong considering the obstacles before the movie made it to theatres. Jana Nayagan was originally intended to be a Pongal release, but certification and legal complications kept it from moving forward. After six months of limbo and uncertainty, the film received an ‘A’ certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
The project also had its own controversy earlier this year when news about the existence of a high-definition leak made news. The movie’s theatrical hopes were affected. But the new booking figures suggest that audience interest has not been affected.
Jana Nayagan, produced by KVN Productions, has an ensemble cast of Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Prakash Raj, Priyamani, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Narain, and Nassar alongside Vijay.
What’s more significant is the film’s place in the history of Vijay’s career. Being politically inclined and having already made some public statements about cinema, Jana Nayagan is widely expected to be his last film as a lead actor. For millions of fans, the film is a goodbye to Tamil cinema’s biggest superstars.
With advance bookings already exceeding ₹10 crore and demand continuing to surge, industry experts are predicting a blockbuster opening weekend. Will Jana Nayagan do wonders for the box office once it comes out? But the buzz around Vijay’s last film is unlike anything we have seen in years.
