When Suriya Can, Why Can’t Telugu Stars? Multiple Releases Spark Debate in Tollywood
Suriya Sivakumar's recent release strategy has raised a lot of debate among the Telugu cinema audience. As Karuppu and Viswanath & Sons are now two of the most popular films, the actor is already doing his next movies, and we are seeing the beginning of his next movie, Scene (Jithu Madhavan), in the title glimpse of his upcoming movie Scene, which is expected to release in November.
If the release is carried out, Suriya will have three theatrical releases within six months. For a Tier-1 star, such a frequency of releases is quite unusual and has left Telugu viewers wondering if their own top-level stars could adopt that strategy.
Suriya’s packed release calendar
Suriya’s current schedule is attracting attention because of the short gap between his films. Karuppu arrived in theatres in May, followed by Viswanath & Sons in August. Scene is scheduled for November.
The actor is also going to have another release at the beginning of next year, and reports suggest he is looking at two to three releases in the following year as well.
What makes this strategy so interesting is that Suriya does not seem to be focusing only on the number of films. Content is still a big player. Karuppu and Viswanath & Sons have got a positive reaction, but Scene will be crucial in seeing if this aggressive release strategy continues to succeed commercially.
Why are Telugu audiences asking the same from their stars?
Scene was a surprise for Telugu movie lovers because it was announced for November. It has long been common for Telugu celebrities to devote multiple years to the work of a movie, and many of them have huge budgets and long production schedules.
While big-budget pan-India films naturally require extensive time for shooting and post-production, the debate is also relevant to regular and mid-range projects.
Telugu audiences are wondering whether actors can reduce the gap between their films. If Tier-1 stars cannot immediately increase their release frequency because of the scale of their projects, mid-range heroes could potentially take the lead by attempting two releases a year instead of limiting themselves to one film.
More films could help the theatrical ecosystem
The discussion goes beyond individual actors and careers. A steady flow of theatrical releases is important to the entire cinema ecosystem, including exhibitors, distributors, technicians, and theatre employees.
The current challenge for theatres today is that they are becoming more and more popular with OTTs. The audience gets comfortable waiting for movies to arrive on streaming services, especially when they are released in so many long gaps between theatrical releases.
If there are movies as popular as this that are released continuously, audiences might have more reasons to go to theatres. Frequent releases of popular stars could well contribute to a more theatrical culture and keep audience interest at a year-round level.
Quality remains the key
But simply increasing the number of releases may not be enough. Suriya’s approach will ultimately come down to whether his films can still provide a compelling story and great entertainment.
If you have to release two or three movies in a year, that is good if the projects are selected and they are of a certain standard. Otherwise, too many releases might bore the audience.
Suriya’s current line-up has, however, generated a lot of discussion for Telugu cinema. It’s not so much that every star should make three movies in six months, but that the industry could find a better balance between production scale, quality and release frequency.
If Scene is also successful, Suriya’s strategy could serve as a model for other South Indian actors. For Telugu cinema, particularly its mid-range heroes, releasing films more regularly could provide audiences with more theatrical choices and help the industry to get more footfalls in the increasingly competitive entertainment industry.
