Korean Kanakaraju: A refreshing mix of horror, comedy and action for a fun theater experience and a Korean-based, visual movie. The main actor Varun Tej plays the lead role in the film, which combines supernatural elements with commercial entertainment and a Korean setting. The film doesn’t change the genre but it gives its audience laugh after laugh with a lot of big moments and one-liners. A fun and light horror-comedy with action and humor is the film’s best hope for a fun movie for viewers.
Kanakaraju is played by Varun Tej whose life takes an unexpected turn when he is entangled in a series of mysterious and supernatural events. The mystery develops and Kanakaraju is exposed to very scary things and weird things and hilarious misunderstandings. Merlapaka Gandhi keeps the suspenseful story moving along with humor so that the terror never gets too much and the humor never feels forced. The Korean setting and references are something new to the movie that differentiates it from the standard commercial entertainment.
The confidence and energy of Varun Tej is all too apparent and it can be seen again and again that he is at ease with experimenting in all kinds of genres. His comic timing is good and he handles action scenes well with humor and depth of emotional impact in the latter. But the biggest surprise of the film is Satya, whose amazing comic timing is so good that it is one of the best of all time. Satya is the most laugh-inducing comic actor in almost every scene, and so he is one of the best supporting characters that helps make the film funny and emotional without distracting from the lead actors.
Korean Kanakaraju is a well-shot and technologically very well done film. The cinematography achieves the film’s classy looks and the production design reflects the supernatural atmosphere. The background score is great and helps to pull the film’s horror and comedy aspects together. The visual effects work well for the genre and support the story but are not distracting. Merlapaka Gandhi has made it through the gap between commercial and supernatural aspects well but, at times, the script becomes routine. The first half moves along nicely with some good comedy sequences and in the second half the pace slows down a bit before it picks up again at the end.
But the film is not without its flaws. The plot is typical of a commercial formula and some of the twists can be expected in advance. The climax had mixed reactions from some viewers as it could have delivered a stronger emotional payoff. A few scenes in the latter half are a little too long and the pace is not that fast to the point of affecting the overall enjoyment, but these flaws do not take away from the overall enjoyment of the film.
Korean Kanakaraju is a funny and fun horror-comedy where the actors and the comedy and the supernatural elements are great. Not the greatest movie in the world but it is what it is, a great family entertainment film. Korean Kanakaraju is great on the big screen and you should watch it.
