Nagarjuna Akkineni recently opened up about a surprising chapter in his career where he made Hindi-dubbed Telugu films so that he created a huge fan base in North India.

“Mass and Don No. 1 connected with northern audiences on a scale that even his famous Hindi movies like Shiva and Khuda Gawah couldn’t,” he said.

Nagarjuna has been popular among Indians for decades. His Hindi film career included Shiva, Khuda Gawah and Criminal; his Telugu filmography had many action-packed entertainment films which later became popular on television and dubbed releases.

Mass films brought in a new fan base

What makes Nagarjuna’s observation very interesting is that dubbed cinema is playing a significant role in its own right. Mass (2004 in Telugu) was one of his biggest commercial successes in the film. It was directed by Raghava Lawrence and Nagarjuna played a big-screen character of action in a larger-than-life role.

But for audiences in some parts of North India the film’s journey continued long after the release date. Hindi-dubbed versions of the film appeared repeatedly on television, and viewers who did not understand Telugu were able to connect with Nagarjuna's screen persona.

Don No. 1 also gained a powerful following among Hindi-speaking television viewers. Online fan discussions often recall watching Nagarjuna’s dubbed action films on channels such as SET Max and some viewers described Mass and Don No. 1 as their introduction to Telugu cinema.

Before the Pan-India Era

Nagarjuna’s comments also point out that the idea of a “pan-India star” was around long before the phrase was a popular part of movie marketing.

Bollywood movies like Baahubali, Pushpa and KGF are so popular today that they still cross language barriers. Nagarjuna himself has also said that mass entertainers can find audiences beyond their specific language markets.

He has pointed to Pushpa, KGF and Baahubali as examples of how bigger-than-life stories can also draw in viewers from all over India.Nagarjuna’s North Indian popularity was built through a combination of direct Hindi films and dubbed Telugu entertainers.

Shiva is still one of his most defining movies and Khuda Gawah, with Amitabh Bachchan and Sridevi as well as Nagarjuna, was another big Hindi-cinema connection.

But his latest reflection confirms that the television-driven popularity of dubbed films produced a completely different kind of connection.

Nagarjuna was a Telugu superstar, but for a generation of viewers, he was a familiar face on Hindi television, and was often seen in action dramas that were repeatedly broadcast and gradually developed cult followings.

His story is an important reminder of the changing nature of Indian cinema. Before theatrical pan-India releases became common, dubbed films, television broadcasts and word-of-mouth helped South Indian stars reach audiences thousands of kilometres away.

For Nagarjuna, Mass and Don No. 1 seem to have played a particularly important role in that journey and as it turns out, sometimes an entire movie’s greatest impact might extend well beyond its own language and theatrical market.
