The project has been in progress for some time now, mainly because of the huge legacy of MS Subbulakshmi and the difficulty of bringing a new film about the life of one of India’s most celebrated classical musicians on top of the list of all time. So far MS Subbulakshmi’s life of one of the world famous musicians MS Subbulakshmi is being featured and its director is not done, the makers are going to announce on September 16 when MS Subbulakshmi’s birthday is celebrated.

The casting of Rashmika comes after so much speculation on the lead role. Sai Pallavi was originally said to be the preferred choice in the role of the legendary singer. But it is now widely accepted that the actress has not joined the project because of the date problem due to her current work. Rukmini Vasanth is also said to have been discussed for the lead role. Now with Rashmika being said to have been finalised, the project has a great run ahead of its official launch.

As an actor, playing MS Subbulakshmi would be a huge part of her job. The singer was not only renowned for her musical talent, but also for her presence in Indian classical music, dignity, humility and public persona. She had an artistic career going on for many decades and her talents were recognised in India and abroad. So playing her is not just about looking at her. But the actress will also need to convey the personality, mannerisms, emotional depth and public presence of one of India’s most famous cultural figures.

Rashmika Mandanna has been able to work in the industry of current Indian cinema in many roles where she has been a part of the films of multiple film industries and shown up on the screens in India for a lot of things. So a biographical role would show her a character rooted in history, music and culture and an entirely different side of her acting ability.

The preparation of the role also needs to be substantial. MS Subbulakshmi's life was very much into music, so the performance has to convey the presence of a very accomplished Carnatic vocalist.

The makers of the film will decide how much of the singer's musical journey is shown through Rashmika's performance, but authenticity will be most important. Specific clothing, body language, stage performances, expressions, and the larger period setting will all play a key role in bringing back the world associated with the great singer.

Gowtam Tinnanuri, who is known for very character-driven storytelling and emotionally driven narratives, is to direct this project. His involvement has added another dimension of interest to the biopic. A film of MS Subbulakshmi’s life will help the director to see not only her musical accomplishments but her professional and personal life and career in that field.

The film is produced by Rockline Venkatesh, Allu Aravind and Bunny Vas. The combination of experienced producers and a director who has many years of experience has been great for the project. With such a talented person at the center of the story, period recreation, music, costumes or performance and visual attention is expected to be very high from the production team.

MS Subbulakshmi is an important figure in Indian classical music history. Her voice and musical interpretation helped bring Carnatic music to masses around India and beyond. She received the highest honours of the country in her lifetime including Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award. Her legacy continues to influence generations of musicians and admirers of classical music.

A biopic about such a figure therefore has expectations beyond conventional commercial cinema. Her work will naturally come to mind in people’s hearts but younger generations will also be introduced to her great contribution to Indian music in the film. That will make it a challenge for the filmmakers, both in the sense that they’ll have to tell her story in a professional way.

Rashmika has already gained interest since her current screen image is different from the historical character she would portray. So to become MS Subbulakshmi will require a lot of preparation with regard to the appearance and the way she would be acting as well. And the actress will need to read the archival material, photographs and recordings to understand the singer's public persona and the way that she might act.

The filmmakers will probably announce more details on September 16. An official announcement on MS Subbulakshmi’s birth anniversary would be most important since it would be the date to formally introduce a film celebrating her life and contribution. Details about the film’s title, who will be in the film, who will be the technical crew and how the film will work will be interesting too.

The casting process has been an interesting part of the project. The initial report of Sai Pallavi and the speculation of Rukmini Vasanth and now Rashmika Mandanna is a sign that the focus is on the role. Such speculation is typical for high-profile biopics, but it is especially common when the protagonist is a cultural icon and the actor/actress is on show.

Rashmika’s film will likely be one of the most challenging and potentially important projects of her career. Her ability to portray the great singer as she is in the film will depend heavily on the screenplay, direction, preparation and performance. If the team can recreate the emotional and cultural richness of MS Subbulakshmi's journey, the project could appeal not only to fans of Rashmika but also to music enthusiasts and people interested in Indian history and culture.

But the expectations on a well-known person must be tempered. Biographical cinema frequently consists of choosing chapters from someone's life for a movie and mixing history with cinema. So the filmmakers will have to make an engaging film while keeping the dignity and significance of MS Subbulakshmi’s legacy intact.

Rashmika Mandanna and Gowtam Tinnanuri’s involvement is another aspect that could make the project notable. If confirmed, the film would bring together a popular actress and a film director who has a strong emotional focus to tell the story of one of the world’s greatest classical musicians. The producers’ experience might also help the project achieve the scale required for a major biographical production.

For now, the casting is already one of the most talked about aspects of the movie. When the makers are going to announce the project, both fans and classical music enthusiasts are waiting for an official announcement of the project on September 16, when the actress will finally be confirmed and the rest of the production team will finally get to know who is collaborating with the lead actress and the rest of the creative team behind the big project. If Rashmika Mandanna does indeed play the role of MS Subbulakshmi, it will be a big step in her career.

Portraying a Bharat Ratna awardee and legendary Carnatic vocalist in the film is hard work, but it also gives us the opportunity to tell the life and the story of a great Indian artist to a new generation. Gowtam Tinnanuri is directing and Rockline Venkatesh, Allu Aravind and Bunny Vas are producing, and the biopic is going to be one of the best South Indian films.
