Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan came under fire after media reports were made public that a Muslim cleric objected to his relationship and reported marriage to Gauri Spratt on religious grounds. The comments have sparked the national conversation on social media with personal choice, religious interpretation, and individual rights.

The Shahi Chief Mufti of Muslim Personal Darul Ifta, Maulana Ibrahim Hussain, voiced his objection to Aamir Khan's reported third marriage. Under the logic of Sharia, such a marriage would not be permitted and Aamir's marriage to a non-Muslim woman was also questioned.

The Mufti said that Islamic personal law does not allow such a marriage in the manner being discussed and urged followers to respect religious principles, according to the Mufti. His comments have since drawn great public interest and there has been mixed response from both the supporters and critics in the media.

A fatwa is also commonly accepted as a non-binding religious opinion or interpretation endorsed by a qualified Islamic scholar. It is not a judicial order or a criminal punishment and does not carry legal force under Indian law. What people choose to do is their own opinion.

The reports have reignited the debate about the balance between religious traditions and personal freedom in India’s diverse and democratic society. Many social media users have said marriage is a personal choice that should remain an individual’s and others are in favor of the cleric’s religious interpretation of it.

Aamir Khan did not respond to the latest controversy publicly. Neither the actor nor Gauri Spratt has issued an official statement on the cleric's comments.

Earlier this year, Aamir introduced Gauri Spratt to the media and described her as someone who has been an important part of his life. The couple has kept on the front page and fans are still following their relationship.

The actor was previously married to Reena Dutta and later to filmmaker Kiran Rao. Although both marriages ended in divorce, Aamir has remained in touch with his former wives and has collaborated with them and still does as well on various professional and family matters.

The latest controversy has once again put the actor in the national spotlight, but legal experts say marital matters are governed by Indian law and religious opinions are separate from the country’s legal framework.

If Aamir Khan or his representatives will respond to the remarks online, the controversy is ongoing and is sure to get a lot of attention and debates about religion and freedom and how we are all evolving in India.
