The Astraverse is on the verge of its next big chapter with Brahmastra 2 as one of Ranbir Kapoor’s biggest upcoming projects. After the big scope and mythology-driven world in the first film, director Ayan Mukerji is preparing to expand the franchise with a much bigger narrative and spectacle. It is already in production and scripting.

Ranbir Kapoor will return to the Astraverse after completing his commitments to Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana Part 2. The actor is expected to finish the shooting of the mythological epic by January 2027. After some time to prepare he will begin Brahmastra 2 in April 2027, returning to the franchise several years after the first instalment introduced the world of Astras.
Ranbir's dual-role challenge is one of the most intriguing things in the sequel. Shiva will be portrayed by the actor and Dev, and it will add another layer of complexity to his performance. Shiva was the central protagonist in the first film but Dev’s character has been shrouded in mystery and anticipation since the end of Brahmastra: Part One - Shiva. The relationship between the two characters is going to be a major part of the plot in the sequel.
Ranbir is excited to return to the Astraverse. The franchise is an enormous cinematic challenge for Ayan Mukerji to work with and develop a world of mythology that is inspired by Indian mythology and modern-day cinematography and visual effects. With the sequel expanding the mythology we learned in the first chapter, the filmmaker is looking to create a bigger universe.
Alia Bhatt is also expected to return as ‘Isha’, Shiva’s love interest and an important character in the Astraverse. Her return with Ranbir might further cement Shiva and Isha’s relationship and allow for new dimensions in mythology for the sequel. Isha was at the heart of the emotional aspect of the first film and is sure to remain in the franchise going forward.
Another key development about Brahmastra 2 is how Ayan Mukerji thinks about Deepika Padukone. He is considering the actress for the powerful role of Amruta, a character that is likely to be well known in the mythology of the Astraverse. According to the report, the team and Deepika are talking, but it is still not clear if they are talking.
Deepika's inclusion would add another major star to an already big-screen cast. Amruta is in talks for a big actor who could bring substantial gravitas to the character. But her participation will depend on scheduling and other timeline considerations. The makers or the actress have not officially announced her casting, so it is still not confirmed.
The sequel is expected to take the Astraverse to a much larger scale. Ayan Mukerji has previously talked about his ambition to create a mythology-based cinematic universe based on Indian cultural ideas and to present it in terms of contemporary storytelling and global filmmaking technologies. Brahmastra 2 would therefore help to establish the larger mythology and to address many of the questions that were left unanswered in the first film.
As for Ranbir Kapoor, the project also seems to be a priority after Ramayana Part 2. Other important projects, like Dhoom 4, are probably on hold for now as the actor gets back to the Astraverse. His two-year association with two large-scale mythology-driven franchises could be very important to him.
The first Brahmastra (released in 2022) introduced audiences to the power of powerful Astras and their protectors. The film received mixed critical reviews, but it generated attention in terms of mythology, visual spectacle, and the possibility of a larger franchise. The sequel has now the chance to build upon that, with a more developed story and a broader film universe.
As production is scheduled for April 2027, more details about the plot, cast, and production schedule may emerge as pre-production progresses. Ranbir Kapoor’s dual role and Alia Bhatt’s return, Ayan Mukerji’s wider vision, and Deepika Padukone’s potential to come in have made Brahmastra 2 one of the most closely watched upcoming films in Indian cinema.
The makers remain mum on the cast and shooting schedule, but the developments indicate that the Astraverse is heading in another direction. If the plan is on track, viewers would soon learn more about Shiva, Dev, and the larger mythology that Ayan Mukerji is building.
