Dhurandhar has seen a lower box office in Japan despite being hailed as one of the biggest Indian blockbusters with a worldwide gross of over ₹3,100 crore. The film, much popular in India and in other countries, has had little business in Japan at the first weekend of the release.

Dhurandhar was released in Japan on 10th July at about 80 cinema locations. But according to early box office reports, the film attracted less than 900 viewers on its opening day, so it had a lower opening compared to expectations of its global success.
The film also failed to get to the top 25 box office places on the first day of release in Japan, and has yet to make a significant impact in one of Asia’s toughest theatrical markets in terms of the competition.
The slow opening surprised many trade observers, particularly because Dhurandhar has enjoyed phenomenal commercial success elsewhere. So far this year alone it has reportedly collected more than ₹3,100 crore worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time.
Analysts in Japan say there are many factors that make the success of a film important beyond box office performance in Japan. Audience preference, local marketing campaigns, release date, competition from local Japanese movies, and awareness of Indian films and Indian cinema are very important factors in the success of a film in Japan.
In recent years, most Indian movies in Japan have been very successful in terms of word of mouth and in terms of sales so far. Some titles didn’t hit record numbers and many of them gained popularity through positive audience reviews and repeat viewership. If Dhurandhar receives positive responses from Japanese moviegoers in the coming weeks, trade experts believe Dhurandhar could still perform well.
The film’s release strategy has also been in the news, as screenings were initially limited to around 80 locations. Distributors may choose to expand or reduce the number of shows in the next few days depending on audience response.
Despite the lukewarm Japanese debut, the movie has a great global reputation due to its impressive box office numbers, large fan base, and positive reception in several territories. The Japanese market is very selective for foreign films, and sustained word-of-mouth is crucial.
Trade will be watching the film’s performance over the coming weekends to see if it can build momentum through audience feedback and positive reviews. On the surface, Dhurandhar is a global blockbuster even as it tries to grow in Japan.
If the film can replicate its global success in Japan remains to be seen, but its overall worldwide performance has already cemented its place among the biggest commercial successes in Indian cinema.
