Ranveer Singh's removal from Don 3 has turned into a legal dispute, and the actor's legal team is opposing the Indian Motion Picture Producers' Association (IMPPA) effort, as Farhan Akhtar and Riteish Sidhwani are demanding Rs 45 crore because Ranveer quit the project and their producers want him to return to work.
The dispute was brought to IMPPA after the producers had raised their complaint. But Ranveer’s lawyers have argued that the producers’ body should not have the power to resolve the issue and that any unresolved issue should be resolved by a court.
Ranveer's legal team challenges IMPPA jurisdiction
According to Mid Day, Ranveer’s legal team submitted a formal response denying the Rs 45 crore demand. The actor did not have a formal agreement with Excel Entertainment and the parties had entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The legal team also asked IMPPA to dismiss the complaint, maintaining that it was not under the organisation’s jurisdiction.
The actor’s representatives had also indicated to producers that if they felt they had a valid claim, they could pursue a court, the legal response said. Ranveer would seek legal remedies if IMPPA tries to pass a resolution against him, it said.
IMPPA meeting postponed
The dispute had already reached an IMPPA meeting. The producers' body had planned discussions on the complaint, but the meeting was postponed after Ranveer's legal response was received.
On August 18, Ranveer's father and representative Jagjit Singh Bhavnani also appeared before IMPPA. However, he was told that the scheduled meeting had been postponed.
For now, IMPPA president Abhay Sinha has said both sides have given their positions. The organisation’s legal team is looking into the issues and will decide where to go next, he said.
It is at this point that the dispute becomes more serious if it gets further than arbitration.
Why are the producers looking for Rs 45 crore?
Don 3 was one of Bollywood's most eagerly awaited projects, and Ranveer Singh was cast to replace Shah Rukh Khan in the iconic role.
The film was expected to go into production in the first half of 2026. However, Ranveer informed the producers in December that he wanted to leave the project.
The decision allegedly came after the actor had already begun preparations for the film. In November 2025, he took basic action and stunt training with Excel Entertainment.
The producers are also believed to have incurred expenses related to international locations, crew arrangements, costumes, travel, sets and other pre-production activities.
After Ranveer's departure, the producers wanted Rs 45 crore as compensation for the losses they claim were caused by the decision.
Don 3 dispute could move to court
Ranveer’s latest legal response is that he does not want IMPPA to determine if compensation is payable. And so his team appears to believe that the matter should be resolved through the appropriate legal process.
And so the dispute may go beyond the producers' association if neither side can reach a compromise.
The situation also raises questions of contractual obligations in big film production, particularly in a major film production, where a lot of pre-production expenditure has already been made.
What's next for Ranveer Singh?
Despite the controversy surrounding Don 3, Ranveer Singh has many projects planned. With Dhurandhar’s success, the actor is now employed with Pralay, a zombie thriller from Jai Mehta, son of filmmaker Hansal Mehta.
Ranveer has already started shooting for the film and will share screen space with Kalyani Priyadarshan.
The future of Don 3 is unknown at this stage, while Ranveer Singh and producers are fighting. As both sides have made their case before IMPPA, the next step from the producers’ body will decide whether the matter goes on and settles down or moves on to the court.
