Rani Mukerji to Receive Honorary Doctor of Letters at Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2026

Bollywood star Rani Mukerji will receive the prestigious Honorary Doctor of Letters (DLitt) from La Trobe University during the 2026 Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) for her contribution to Indian cinema over nearly 3 decades and for her humanitarian and social work.

The honorary degree will be awarded at a special ceremony on August 14, 2026 at Federation Square in Melbourne, as part of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, which will take place from August 13 to August 23.

Rani Mukerji is one of Hindi cinema’s most celebrated actresses, known for films such as Black, Hum Tum, Mardaani, Hichki, and Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway. She has been praised for portraying strong female characters and she has always taken on socially relevant stories.

Rani’s cinema work has also been awarded in the past and her work has been for women, children, and underprivileged communities. Her work beyond films has received international recognition and she deserves this degree.

Rani said she was very humbled by the recognition and that cinema had been her biggest teacher. She added that getting the honor at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne made it even more special because the festival helps us to celebrate Indian cinema globally.
