Ranveer Singh's exit from Don 3 has taken a legal turn and his legal team is asking IMPPA to stay out of the dispute according to reports. Singh also said he will sue the association if the association doesn't resolve the issue.
The dispute was reported to have begun at an IMPPA meeting on August 18. Representatives of both sides went before the association, the sources said. Ranveer’s legal team argued that IMPPA has no authority to hear and decide on the matter and that any dispute between the actor and the producers should be handled in court.
The development follows an earlier meeting with IMPPA on August 14. Ranveer’s legal representatives had sent a letter to the association before that meeting, sources said. According to the letter, the actor did not have a formal agreement with Excel Entertainment but had entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the company.
Ranveer’s side had also submitted a formal response to the producers’ alleged Rs 45 crore claim, a report says. His legal team argued that the complaint should be dismissed because the matter falls outside IMPPA’s jurisdiction. The August 14 meeting was postponed, it said.
Jagjit Singh Bhavnani, Ranveer’s father, is also said to have arrived at the venue around the time of the postponed meeting and was informed that the proceedings would not take place that day. The matter was taken up again at the same time on August 18 when both sides put forward their legal arguments.
At the second meeting, Ranveer’s legal staff said Excel Entertainment had no basis to bring the complaint before IMPPA. The actor’s side maintained that if Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani believed they had a legitimate claim, they could approach a court. More significantly, what the letter said was that Ranveer would take legal action if IMPPA itself passed any resolution against him.
IMPPA president has said that legal teams representing both sides presented their views at the August 18 meeting. The association’s own legal team will now examine the submissions before deciding how to proceed. That means that the problem has not yet come to a complete resolution in the industry.
The dispute stems from the troubled journey of Don 3 which was officially announced in 2023 by Excel Entertainment. The film was positioned as the next chapter in the popular Don franchise and marked a major change in casting. Ranveer Singh was announced as the new face of the titular character, taking over the role previously portrayed by Shah Rukh Khan.
The announcement was a big deal because Shah Rukh Khan had already associated himself with the character after Don and Don 2. So Ranveer’s debut as the new Don was seen as a big change for the franchise. But the film’s production plan was unsure afterward.
Reports of Ranveer’s departure have pointed to creative differences, delays and concerns over the production delays as reasons for his exit as well as about the script of the project. The exact reasons for Ranveer’s departure are not entirely clear, but now the dispute is not so much casting and production issues and has shifted from casting and production issues into an industry dispute with an industry group.
Ranveer’s exit comes at a time when he’s been on a roll with ‘Dhurandhar’ and has cemented his position in Bollywood as one of the most popular actors. It was no surprise that the actor had been forced out from Don 3 and was a big talking point for movie industry analysts.
The main question is whether IMPPA will take any further action once it has received the legal submissions from both sides. With Ranveer’s team stating that they are prepared to challenge any adverse resolution in court, the issue could move from an industry forum to the courts.
The situation also shows the contractual issues that can arise when major projects languish in production and the creative direction changes in terms of what you have to do or when a film is in the process of development or production schedule changes. But until the association completes its legal review, it appears that there won't be a definitive solution through IMPPA until the association is ready.
Now everything is coming right from the start of Don 3, so we’re left with the association’s next move and whether the producers will go through legal steps to pursue their claims. And Ranveer Singh has the latest warning that his exit from the franchise is no longer just a Bollywood casting dispute and he and the producers are prepared to fight it.
