Artificial Trailer: Andrew Garfield Plays Sam Altman In Luca Guadagnino’s OpenAI Drama
Andrew Garfield plays OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in Artificial- a film based on the dramatic events that led up to the company and ChatGPT’s launch.
Andrew Garfield is taking on one of the biggest names in AI for his next film. He plays OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in Artificial, a drama set against the rise of artificial intelligence and turmoil at OpenAI in 2023. On September 8 the trailer was released, it’s Garfield’s first extended look at Altman yet.
Garfield introduces Altman as Garfield while also showing his ambitions for AI and the explosive growth of OpenAI. In the trailer, the actor’s character talks about the possibilities of AI and launches ChatGPT (which went on to become one of the most influential consumer technology products in recent years) but also seems to address what happened when so much powerful technology became widely available.
One of the trailer’s most memorable lines is Garfield’s Altman saying that ChatGPT “opened Pandora’s box.” That line sets up a story that seems to be about not just what generative AI represented as a technological breakthrough but also the ethical, corporate and personal challenges that followed.
Artificial is set against one of the most turbulent periods in OpenAI’s history. In November 2023 Sam Altman was unexpectedly removed from his role as CEO by the board of directors. The board said at the time that Altman had not been candid enough in communicating with the board and that this had hampered its ability to do what it was supposed to do.
Altman’s firing set off a massive shakeup at OpenAI. At the time, Mira Murati was the chief technology officer of the company and she became interim CEO. But it didn’t last long: After discussions and developments within the company Altman returned to OpenAI just days later and resumed being CEO again.
These events are central to the story Artificial is telling. Monica Barbaro plays Mira Murati and gives the film another key angle on the extraordinary leadership crisis that played out at AI company.
The movie also has another big technology figure as a prominent character. People reports that Ike Barinholtz plays Elon Musk — one of OpenAI’s original co-founders. Musk later became one of the company’s most vocal critics and is currently in an ongoing public feud with Altman and OpenAI. Yura Borisov (Anora) stars alongside Cooper Hoffman, Jason Schwartzman and Mark Rylance in the film.
Behind the camera Artificial brings together two major filmmakers and writers. Luca Guadagnino (Challengers, After The Hunt) directs while Simon Rich (Saturday Night Live writer) wrote the screenplay (Rich is known for his quirky comedic/satirical writing style)
Guadagnino’s filmmaking style and Rich’s screenplay suggest Artificial may take the OpenAI saga in a direction other than corporate drama: It has the chance to look at personalities, ambitions and conflicts behind one of the most important developments in modern technology as well as the unpredictable consequences of AI’s explosive growth.
For Garfield it’s a big change because he takes on the role of a real-life tech executive whose career has become intertwined with generative AI. Altman will be one of the film’s biggest talking points because so much of it is based on events that were global news stories.
Artificial is set to have its world premiere at the New York Film Festival in October. After its festival debut, it will arrive in cinemas on December 25, one of the holiday season’s marquee releases.
With Sam Altman, OpenAI, ChatGPT and the events surrounding its leadership at its heart Artificial will appeal to audiences interested in Hollywood dramas as well as the fast moving world of artificial intelligence. The trailer has shown us what a high stakes story is all about but we’ll have to wait until it hits theatres to see how the film interprets one of the most consequential episodes in the history of AI.
