BLACKPINK Lisa Says ‘Hello’ To A New Era With SaWaDiKa: Meaning Behind Her Thai-Titled Song
Lisa is officially starting a new chapter in her solo career with SaWaDiKa, the pre-release single of her upcoming EP Press Play. As the high-energy song will be released on September 4 and is the K-pop superstar coming back to the rap and hip-hop sound of the song, her Thai heritage will always be the nucleus of the song and its visuals.
But Lisa’s powerful rap delivery and high-energy performance have naturally become talking points for fans in the past months, but it is the song’s unusual title that has generated particular curiosity. Why is the song named SaWaDiKa?
The answer is closely connected to Lisa's Thai roots.
What Does SaWaDiKa mean?
SaWaDiKa is a stylised spelling of the Thai phrase Sawatdee ka (สวัสดีค่ะ) in the sense that it means "Hello" or "Hi." Sawatdee is the traditional greeting in Thai and ka is a polite sentence-ending particle that women frequently use.
Together, “sawatdee ka” is a charming and feminine way to say hello. In renaming the Thai greeting the title of her new single, Lisa gives the song a distinctly personal identity.
The choice also works on a symbolic level. With SaWaDiKa as the first release from her upcoming Press Play EP, the title can be interpreted as Lisa saying "hello" to a new phase of her solo career.
Instead of an English title, Lisa chose a phrase that is deeply linked to the country where she was born and raised. It gives her new musical era a distinctly Thai signature.
Lisa Goes Back To Her Rap And Hip-Hop Roots
SaWaDiKa is a return to that rap-heavy style that has defined Lisa’s sound outside of BLACKPINK. That punchy hip-hop sound, confident verses, and memorable chorus is what the singer and rapper are doing to keep their own flow on the front line.
The title itself becomes a crucial part of the song; the phrase SaWaDiKa is repeated in the chorus. This makes the Thai phrase more than just a name for the track; it is a recurring musical hook that is fundamental to the song’s identity.
The release also marks Lisa's first solo single of 2026, after her appearances on collaborative projects earlier in the year. Goals was among the collaborations with Lisa alongside Anitta and Rema for the official FIFA World Cup 2026 album.
SaWaDiKa Brings Lisa Back To Bangkok
Lisa’s connection to Thailand goes beyond the song’s title. The SaWaDiKa music video was filmed across Bangkok, and many of her hometown’s places and scenes were integrated into the visual world of the song.
The decision to shoot the video in Bangkok adds to Lisa’s background to the song. Her global career has taken her from Thailand to the biggest stages in the world, but the new single consciously incorporates elements of her home country into her new solo chapter.
The video was directed by Bang Jae Yeob, a Korean director who has worked with K-pop artists. Lisa is seen in a number of striking fashion looks in the video, an eye-catching red cut-out leather outfit with boxing shorts with the words “SaWaDiKa” in rhinestones.
The styling, choreography, and Bangkok setting come together to create a visual identity that is globally polished and distinctly connected to Lisa’s origins.
Why did Lisa choose a Thai greeting?
For Lisa, the title seems to convey something more than its literal translation. As Lalisa Manobal, she has remained connected with her Thai identity even as she has been one of the world’s biggest K-pop stars.
Born in Buriram, Thailand, Lisa has incorporated aspects of her heritage into her solo persona and creative work. Naming the first single from a new EP after a Thai greeting therefore gives the project an intimate starting point.
There is also a clear conceptual message behind it. If SaWaDiKa means “hello,” then that song, once again, is Lisa introducing herself to audiences as she moves into the next phase of her solo journey.
In this sense, the title functions on two levels: it is a celebration of where Lisa is from and an introduction to where she is going next.
When will Lisa's Press Play EP be released?
SaWaDiKa is released in advance of Lisa's upcoming EP Press Play. It will be released on October 23, 2026, on LLOUD Co. and RCA Records.
The release is yet another significant event in a busy year for Lisa. In addition to her music work, the BLACKPINK star will be working to make the theatrical release of Always Lalisa (her own feature documentary).
Directed by Sue Kim, the documentary will be released worldwide in October and will be premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. Lisa will also be performing at her VIVA LA LISA residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas in November.
With SaWaDiKa opening the door to her next musical chapter, Lisa is blending her global pop-star image with one of the most personal aspects of her identity: her Thai heritage. So the song’s title is therefore more than just a catchy song name, it’s Lisa’s way of saying hello to a new era.
