Christopher Nolan Could Earn Up to $100 Million From The Odyssey, Says Forbes

Christopher Nolan is preparing for one of Hollywood's biggest paydays in front of him, and it could be one of its biggest. The Odyssey is a film that has a budget of $100 million (and a huge budget) that has been commissioned by the Academy Award-winning director. And with Universal Pictures earning up to $100 million from it (for example, Nolan will make more money, he will be able to make $100 million himself if the movie sells well and Universal Pictures gets a big return from it as well).

Nolan made a substantial upfront salary for his work on The Odyssey (about $20 million), but he also has a deal to get 20% of the studio’s box office. It's a unique deal with his wife Emma Thomas that could see his salary of $100 million if the movie stays strong in theaters for the next weeks and months.

This is just one more example of Nolan’s great standing in the film industry as he is one of the few filmmakers whose name alone is able to draw audiences from all corners of the world. After Oppenheimer was such a success (a lot of Academy Awards and critical acclaim) that Universal Pictures was able to finance The Odyssey at a budget of $250 million. It’s not only a big-budget project but it’s also the biggest film of Nolan’s entire career.

Nolan’s reported salary and his deal are indicative of a changing trend in the film industry— top directors are now negotiating backend profit-sharing packages to help him in making money as much as he can afford given the fact that he’s not even making a salary on his own film.
