Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey Crosses ₹2,870 Crore in 6 Days, Targets ₹8,700 Crore Worldwide

Christopher Nolan has once again demonstrated why he is regarded as one of Hollywood’s all-time greatest filmmakers. The Odyssey, his new epic, earned $328 million (about ₹2,870 crore) worldwide in six days of release. It’s one of the biggest theatrical hits of 2026, and on the long way to the coveted $1 billion (about ₹8,750 crore) worldwide record.

The Odyssey, released worldwide on July 17, scored over $264.1 million (around ₹2,311 crore) in its first weekend opening and is the biggest opening of Christopher Nolan’s career. The film’s box office performance was also not even close to the opening collections of The Dark Knight Rises, which is a new benchmark for the Oscar-winning director.

The Odyssey (based on Homer's Greek epic) stars Matt Damon as the King of Ithaca, Odysseus; it also features a fantastic ensemble cast that includes Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron and many more stars. Both have been praised for their performances and Nolan's signature storytelling style.

The Odyssey is the first major feature film shot entirely in IMAX film cameras, and a specially made 70mm IMAX camera for this film has been developed for this film. The amazing cinematography has encouraged the cinema audience to go to high-quality cinemas and there is huge demand for tickets worldwide.

The film has also received rave reviews. It has a 94% critics’ score and 97% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is one of Nolan’s highest-rated films. It has some of the most beautiful visuals, emotionally powerful storytelling and big-scale action to it.

Demand for premium screenings has been unprecedented. IMAX theatres in several countries have already sold out shows and the few 70mm IMAX screenings are fully booked weeks in advance. The premium ticket pricing also played a huge role in the film’s box office success.

It was not before its release that some fans were not happy with the casting, and they felt that the character of Odysseus was portrayed well by Matt Damon. After the release of the film the doubts have mostly disappeared, and the public acclaim of the performances and Nolan’s ambitious vision has been given to this film so far.

Produced on a budget of $250 million (around ₹2,190 crore), The Odyssey has already recovered a large portion of its production costs within its first week. The film has received excellent word-of-mouth, excellent audience response and demand for IMAX screenings and industry analysts believe it is on the way to exceeding ₹8,750 crore ($1 billion) globally and is likely to become the highest-grossing film of Christopher Nolan.
