Chuck Russell, who has been a film director from his career (The Mask, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, The Blob and The Scorpion King) has died at the age of 74.
Russell died on July 25, according to reports. His representative said the filmmaker was found unconscious in his home in San Diego by the local fire department. The cause of death is still unknown.
As soon as the news came out, tributes poured in from fans and movie industry players. Jim Carrey, who collaborated with Russell on the huge 1994 studio movie *The Mask*, also paid tribute to Russell.
In a statement to TMZ, Carrey talked about Russell’s positive energy and the atmosphere he created while filming the movie.
“I consider it a privilege to have worked with Chuck Russell, who, during the shooting of *The Mask*, created an ebullient, childlike atmosphere of wonder and camaraderie on his set,” Carrey said.
The actor said Russell’s playfulness and creative spirit had influenced the cast and crew.
"Every one of us has been blessed for many years by that buoyant and timeless moment. I consider *The Mask* one of the jewels of my creative life. Thank you, Chuck,” Carrey said.
*The Mask* was a huge commercial success in 1994 and an important part of the development of Jim Carrey as a worldwide superstar. It had the special combination of comedy, fantasy and animation-inspired visual effects that made it one of the most memorable movies of the decade.
There was also the horror genre Russell was famous in. He was the director of *A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors*, which is still one of the most popular movies in that series. The 1988 remake of *The Blob* also was so popular that it became a cult favorite.
The filmmaker later directed *The Scorpion King* with Dwayne Johnson, further showcasing his ability to work across action, fantasy and adventure genres.
Russell, born May 6, 1958, worked as a director, producer and screenwriter for more than 30 years. He made films in many genres including horror, science fiction, comedy and action.
Fans came out in song, as well as on social media to remember the filmmaker and recognize his contributions to cinema. Many praised *A Nightmare on Elm Street 3*, *The Mask* and *The Blob*, among others, as some of his best films.
And fans were also struck by the lasting impact of his movies and disappointed that Russell had not directed more major productions in later years.
Chuck Russell is survived by his wife Ania, children Logan, Riley and Carlyn, and sister Anne. His legacy will be tied to both very influential genre movies and *The Mask*, a movie that turned Jim Carrey into one of Hollywood’s biggest stars.
