In the second trailer of *Clayface* (Tom Rhys Harries), which has been released, the film featured the DCU horror film and the tragic loss of Matt Hagen. Directed by James Watkins, the movie is expected to be released in theaters on October 23, 2026, and will be the first horror movie in DCU.
The trailer is about two minutes and 32 seconds long and sees Matt Hagen in character as a popular and charismatic actor whose life starts to change drastically after he is disfigured. The incident is thought to be linked to an affair between the girlfriend of one of the film’s antagonists. Matt goes through the legal system to seek justice; he can’t go back to his previous life.
Matt has lost everything and his identity, so he turns to Dr. Caitlin Corr, a scientist working on an experimental treatment. The treatment at first seems to offer him a chance to recover. But the treatment is immediately starting to have horrible side effects.
Matt’s face and body gradually turn to a bizarre clay-like shape in the trailer. The change as he ages also makes his physical state more unstable (and worse) and his mental state worse. It seems to be the story of how he transforms from a celebrated actor into a frightening figure who is feared in Gotham City.
Instead of Clayface being a conventional supervillain, the film seems to be about the emotional collapse of Clayface, the loneliness, and the struggle to find out who he is. The trailer indicates that a movie with body horror, psychological drama, and the darker elements of the Batman universe will be in the picture.
Clayface, based on the DC Comics character of the same name, has appeared throughout the comics and is known as one of Batman’s most perennial foes. At his best, he transforms his body and his look, so he is one of the more distinctive enemies associated with Gotham.
In addition to Tom Rhys Harries, Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella, and Eddie Marsan play big roles. Harries, best known for his work in *The Gentlemen*, will play the title role and will be the heart of the emotional and physical change in the film.
James Watkins directed the movie from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini. Flanagan had previously expressed hope of making a film about Clayface during the DCEU days and later pitched the idea to DC Studios.
James Gunn and Peter Safran are producers along with *The Batman* director Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris. The film is part of DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, which also includes the film *Superman* and *Supergirl* as well.
The DCU is expanding further with the next season of *Lanterns*, which starts on August 16, 2026. Then *Man of Tomorrow*, the sequel to *Superman*, is directed by James Gunn and will be released on July 9, 2027.
*Clayface* is very much in line with the horror aspects and one of DC's weirdest characters, so it is very much going to be a big departure for the superhero franchise.
