Elon Musk Slams ‘Musk’ Documentary, Calls It a ‘Hit Piece’ and Alex Gibney a ‘Horrible Human’
Elon Musk has strongly criticized filmmaker Alex Gibney’s new documentary Musk, calling the four-hour film a “hit piece” and claiming its director “has zero integrity.”
Musk made his remarks on X shortly after the documentary premiered at the Venice Film Festival.
The documentary, led by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney, premiered on September 8 and is about Musk’s rise as a technology entrepreneur, his companies, political power and personal life.
The movie has been largely well received from early reviews and is said to have received a four-minute standing ovation at its Venice premiere.
Musk has rejected the film’s portrayal of him. In posts on X, he attacked Gibney personally and referred to the documentary as a ‘hit piece.’
In another post, Musk wrote that “dogshit is worth more respect” than the filmmaker and called Gibney a “horrible human.”
Musk also criticized the documentary for being boring despite its nearly four-hour runtime.
He alleged that Gibney had brought together people who either had grievances against him or did not know him personally.
It remains unclear whether Musk has watched the completed documentary. The film’s production team has said Musk declined to participate in the project.
Gibney said he initially wanted to interview Musk, but after that did not happen, the filmmakers continued their investigation using interviews, archival material and other sources.
The documentary includes interviews with Musk's former wife Justine Musk, father Errol Musk, Tesla co-founder Martin Eberhard, LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman and former partner Ashley St. Clair.
It also looks at Musk’s political involvement, Tesla’s self-driving technology, his takeover of Twitter and X and his relationships and family life.
One of the central talking points of the documentary is St. Clair’s appearance. At the Venice press conference, she claimed she had been offered a $40 million non-disclosure agreement after the birth of her child with Musk.
Musk denied that she had anything of that nature and accused her of making false claims.
Gibney has defended his approach to the documentary as the project expanded as Musk got involved in American politics and went beyond the technology business.
The film has been described by the filmmaker as a story of how one unelected tech billionaire came to have so much power over business, politics and public debate.
"Musk" is scheduled for release in the U.S. on October 16, 2026. The fight between Musk and Gibney has brought more attention to a documentary already receiving a lot of attention following its Venice premiere and has generated a lot of conversation after it premiered.
