The very first trailer of Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol has been released, and it gives us a look at Johnny Depp as Ebenezer Scrooge. Directed by Ti West, the fantasy horror adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic, and more atmospheric than ever, is coming to cinema on November 13, 2026.
Johnny Depp plays the miserly Scrooge in the film, where he makes his Hollywood studio debut. Depp is in heavy prosthetics and period costume in the trailer, a colder, intimidating version of the legendary character, hinting at a deep and emotional redemption that lies ahead. The teaser is gothic in tone, supernatural and psychological in nature, unlike previous adaptations of A Christmas Carol.
The ensemble cast adds more star power to the project. Ian McKellen plays Jacob Marley, Scrooge's ghostly former business associate, and Rupert Grint plays the kindly Bob Cratchit. Sam Claflin is Fred, Scrooge’s friendly nephew with Andrea Riseborough as the Ghost of Christmas Past. There’s Daisy Ridley, Tramell Tillman and so many other prominent actors.
One of the trailer’s most striking moments is when Scrooge says his famous “Humbug!” line before dark supernatural encounters begin to take place. The film’s emotional storytelling in the trailer is interspersed with haunting imagery so that the film will also lean into horror but keep Dickens’ main themes of redemption, compassion and second chances alive.
The trailer was released in the middle of San Diego Comic-Con 2026, and Johnny Depp appeared in full Scrooge costume to promote the movie. His surprise appearance generated significant buzz online and made Ebenezer one of the most talked-about movie reveals of the event.
Director Ti West, who has made acclaimed horror films like Pearl and MaXXXine, brings his signature gothic style to this adaptation. Given that Paramount Pictures is funding the project, it is to be hoped that Ebenezer will offer a new kind of film to us and will honor one of the most enduring stories of all time.
Now that the first trailer has been released, there is great fanfare for Depp’s return as a major lead actor in the movie. With a great cast, some dark, haunted imagery and a dark reimagining of Charles Dickens’s Christmas Carol, Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol will be one of the most eagerly awaited fantasy movies of the 2026 holiday season.
