Prime Video released the first teaser for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3, which is the darkest and most difficult part of the world of fantasy so far. The teaser was released at the streaming platform’s Hall H presentation at the San Diego Comic-Con 2026 at which the show’s creators and cast discussed new details about the eagerly awaited season.
The showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay were also at the show alongside cast members Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Owain Arthur, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Charlie Vickers and Daniel Weyman. New cast member Jamie Campbell Bower also joined the presentation as the makers provided a preview of the next chapter of the Middle-earth story.
Season 3 will take place five years after the fall of Eregion, when Middle-earth has been transformed by war. Sauron’s armies continued to conquer the land and Middle-earth (and the people) went to war.
Sauron’s relentless pursuit of the One Ring will be at the beating heart of the new season. Now that he has settled in Barad-dûr, the Dark Lord is ready for the powerful ring which will enable him to tighten his hold over Middle-earth.
Sauron's power is expected to force Elves, Dwarves, Men and Wizards to give up their long-standing differences. The next season will presumably see unlikely alliances in play as the various factions work to stop Sauron before his power becomes impossible to resist.
New Characters Join the Middle-earth Saga
Prime Video has also announced a few new members of the cast. Eddie Marsan will play Thrain, the elder brother of King Durin IV. Andrew Richardson will play Anarion, the younger son of Elendil and brother of Isildur.
And, of course, Adam Young will be Marnukh, a mysterious Orc whose motives remain unclear.
Jamie Campbell Bower, Galadriel's long-lost husband, will play the role of Celeborn. Zubin Varla will play Khamûl the Easterling, and he is from the East of Middle-earth.
Simon Pegg to Voice the Balrog
One of the biggest surprises that came out in the Comic-Con panel was that Simon Pegg was cast for the voice of the Balrog.
The news was so popular because the series will give the fearsome creature a voice for the first time in the entire franchise. And it could bring a new perspective to one of Middle-earth’s most awful beasts.
The Hall H presentation also featured an unexpected appearance by four armoured Nazgûl, Second Age predecessors of the Nazgûl. Their appearance was part of a special live presentation centred on Sauron and his growing influence.
Season 3 Release Schedule
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 3 will be released on Prime Video on November 11, 2026.
The first four episodes will be released together on November 11, and episodes 5 and 6 on November 18. The last two episodes of the season will arrive on November 25.
With Sauron now focused on the One Ring, Middle-earth heading towards all-out war and several major new characters joining the story, Season 3 is expected to greatly expand the scale of the series.
The teaser also suggests a darker tone in the next season where alliances are tested and Sauron’s fight becomes increasingly desperate. As Middle-earth fights on, this show will only be interesting to see how the original characters and stories are linked to the larger J.R.R. Tolkien mythology.
