The Odyssey was one of the most anticipated movies of the year, with a big ensemble cast including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, and so many other Hollywood stars. The movie was anticipated to be very well received with advance ticket bookings already sold out months before the movie was released and some premium format screenings saw demand nearly a year before it was made.

The Odyssey earned over $50 million in total worldwide in its opening day and over ₹481 crore in Indian currency, according to early box office figures. And that is probably the highest first day number for Christopher Nolan’s film, which is higher than the opening day numbers of several of his previous blockbusters.

Nolan’s global fame and excitement for his adaptation of the epic Greek epic, the strong opening, really makes you think that he will do something really special. With Inception, Interstellar, Dunkirk, and Oppenheimer, he has made it so clear that he can produce beautiful and intellectually engaging films. With The Odyssey he has once again captivated audiences around the world.

The movie has also performed very well in India, where Hollywood movies have become ever more popular. The Odyssey was released mainly in multiplexes across major metropolitan cities and made over ₹17.40 crore on its first day. Excluding advance bookings, the opening day earnings of the film in India are estimated to be close to ₹20 crore and is one of the biggest Hollywood openings in India.

One of the reasons the movie was widely popular in India is its multilingual release strategy. The film was released in English as well as Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil, making it available in more languages than just English in India.

The English language version was the strongest, contributing about ₹13.75 crore to the overall collection. The Hindi version generated around ₹2 crore and the Telugu dubbed version earned about ₹1.10 crore. The Tamil version added about ₹65 lakh to the opening-day revenue of the film.

India is also a large market for major Hollywood movies. Over the years, films such as Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: No Way Home have all generated huge box office figures in India. Recently, Deadpool & Wolverine opened at around ₹21 crore on the opening day, which proves that foreign movies are very popular among Indian moviegoers.

The Odyssey is likely to continue to shine for the remainder of the week with positive reviews from the audience and Christopher Nolan’s loyal fan base (and not just the film’s core audience). IMAX and large-screen experiences will definitely help this film win out in the long run in terms of its performance.

The Odyssey’s success also comes just ahead of another Hollywood movie. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is coming to theatres later this month, and trade experts expect that to continue to dominate the Indian and global markets in the long run.

With a huge worldwide opening of over ₹481 crore and a fantastic start in India, The Odyssey has become one of the biggest movies of the year. If sustained, we can expect this film to become one of Christopher Nolan’s highest-grossing movies.
