The Odyssey has achieved a major milestone on the Indian box office crossing the Rs 100 crore gross mark in its first week of release. Matt Damon’s film is the second Christopher Nolan movie to do so in India after the phenomenal success of Oppenheimer.
The Odyssey opened in Indian theaters on July 17 and got off to a strong start with a net worth of Rs 17.40 crore on the first day of release (around Rs 17.40 crore net revenue) across Indian cinemas. There was a big box office for the film over the weekend and its three-day total was over Rs 60 crore and there was strong momentum in major markets.
According to the trade tracker Sacnilk, the film earned an estimated Rs 6.50 crore net on its sixth day, Wednesday, across 8,268 shows, down from Tuesday's earnings but the film remained a strong performer on premium and regular shows.
With the new collections in place, The Odyssey is estimated to have earned around Rs 84.15 crore net and Rs 100.38 crore gross in India. It is one of the few Hollywood films to cross the Rs 100 crore gross mark in the country.
The film experienced the expected slowdown after its opening weekend; collections dropped on Monday and Tuesday, and further dropped on Wednesday. But the drop has been fairly contained and the film is still hitting thousands of screenings across the country.
The strong performance means that The Odyssey isn’t only relying upon curiosity on opening day or Christopher Nolan’s strong-knit fan base. Strong word of mouth and audience interest in the film’s large-scale storytelling have kept it going in the first week.
The original English-language version is still the leading source of the film’s earnings in India. Hindi, Tamil and Telugu dubbed versions have also contributed to the overall collections but English screenings have seen the highest occupancy levels, particularly in major metropolitan markets.
The film has been successful on premium large-format screens such as IMAX. Nolan’s reputation for creating visually impressive theatrical experiences has driven demand for premium screenings; viewers are more comfortable with watching the movie on the biggest screens for that.
The success also adds to Nolan's growing box office record in India. In its theatrical run, Oppenheimer was one of the filmmaker’s biggest successes in the country: having grossed more than Rs 128 crore. With The Odyssey now crossing Rs 100 crore gross in its opening week, Nolan again has proved he can turn ambitious, big-screen filmmaking into a very big movie.
Matt Damon’s performance is also significant for Matt Damon because it is his second film to cross the Rs 100 crore gross mark in India.
Based on Homer's ancient Greek epic, The Odyssey follows King Odysseus on his journey to return home after the Trojan War. He goes through dangerous situations with mythical creatures, divine forces and the like.
The cast includes Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Jon Bernthal, Himesh Patel, John Leguizamo and Mia Goth in a variety of roles.
And with a strong theatrical momentum and the Nolan brand still drawing audiences, The Odyssey is going to continue to grow and will probably breach the box office barometer for the filmmaker in India.
