The Odyssey and Dune Part Three Are Connected in Surprising Way: From Greek Mythology to House Atreides

Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ has become one of the biggest theatrical attractions of the year and went over the Rs 90 crore mark in India within four days of its worldwide release on July 17. The film, which stars Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, has also made the connection with Denis Villeneuve’s next sci-fi epic ‘Dune: Part Three’ in the world.

While the two films are quite different from each other, in their respective world-view Greek mythology and dynastic tragedy are linked. The Odyssey is Homer’s ancient epic about King Odysseus and his long journey home after the Trojan War. Dune is set thousands of years from now in the long future and follows the rise of House Atreides in a vast interstellar empire.

The connection becomes more explicit through the mythology that inspired Frank Herbert’s “Dune.” House Atreides is well known for being the House of Atreus, one of the most tragic royal houses in Greek mythology. Agamemnon, Orestes and other characters are among them whose stories are about betrayal, sacrifice, revenge and destiny.

The Trojan War is a key starting point for this connection. Agamemnon, the ruler of Mycenae and commander of the Greek forces, made a terrible sacrifice before the war and gave up his daughter Iphigenia to appease the goddess Artemis. But the sacrifice helped the Greek fleet sail to Troy and destroyed his family.

When Agamemnon finally returned from the war, he was murdered by his wife Clytemnestra and her lover Aegisthus. His son Orestes later avenged his death and the cycle of violence and tragedy continued in the House of Atreus.

Frank Herbert's creation of House Atreides seems to be in keeping with this mythology. Paul Atreides is not very physically related to Agamemnon either, but is a kind of symbolic successor of the ancient Greek dynasty. House Atreides is the kind of noble bloodline that has been sacrificed, betrayed and fought over and over again over the course of all civilizations.

There are also similarities between Paul Atreides and Orestes. The two characters survive the destruction of their families and return to confront those responsible for their suffering. Orestes seeks revenge for his murdered father while Paul survives the fall of House Atreides before going to war with the Harkonnens and Emperor Shaddam IV.

The connection between The Odyssey and Dune: Part Three is also evident with their actors. Zendaya is in both films, playing Goddess Athena in Nolan's epic and Chani in Villeneuve's Dune franchise. Robert Pattinson also plays Antinous in The Odyssey and the villainous Scytale in Dune: Part Three.

Both films are also designed as major IMAX spectacles. Dune: Part Three will be released in theatres and in IMAX on December 18, 2026. Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya will be the title actors, alongside Florence Pugh, Robert Pattinson, Rebecca Ferguson, Jason Momoa, Anya Taylor-Joy and Javier Bardem.

So while Nolan’s “The Odyssey” and Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Three” are very different genres, their shared mythology, tragic royal bloodlines and larger-than-life storytelling give them a striking connection between two of the most eagerly awaited films of 2026.
